Should 23 year olds be in complete control of a company’s social media pages? This is a hot topic now-a-days with such hype around using social media as a marketing tool. One would think that a younger generation would really know what they are doing when it comes to social media. Though this may not be the case. So, is the social media generation capable of managing social media?
Personally, I think people tend to under estimate the younger generation. While we can be silly and act on impulses, when it comes time to work, we do just that. I think it is unfair to say that a 23 year old is not competent enough to have control of a companies social media pages. Think about the inventors of social media. The inventors of Facebook were college kids! An established 23 year old professional should be able to go above and beyond a companies standards for social media.
All of this said, I do understand why employers have become weary of letting a 23 year old have control. The Inc article does have some valid points but I think many 23 year olds can prove them wrong. Yes, people in their early twenties can be immature, they can be focused on themselves, and they can be somewhat inexperienced, but I think this is a generalization for the most part. A new graduate can be just as professional on the job as someone who has been in the field for twenty years. Age does not define a person.
I do think the social media generation is capable of managing social media. I also believe companies may be nervous about letting a young, recent graduate have so much responsibility. When companies hire young people to help with or take over their social media pages, they obviously shouldn’t let them go with free reign right away. As with any new employee, a young 23 year old should be monitored at first. Let them prove themselves as a young professional. I think if more companies were to do this, 9 times out of 10, they would find out that 23 year olds really can properly handle themselves and a company online.
I think that you had very good points and I agree 100%. As I wrote in my blog, when it comes to work, young adults are going to act more professional than when they are outside of work. They will have to prove themselves but they are capable of the responsibility. I really liked how you mentioned that Facebook was created by a college student. Also he was not just a college student, he was a dropout as well. Age does not determine how mature a person is going to be and that is why businesses need to not only focus on intern’s age but also their personality and professionalism.
