Portfolio #5: Relation of Texture to Pattern

134For my fifth portfolio piece I chose to do a piece that will create chapes of a composition by drawing patterns and textures. When I was flipping through the book to pick out what piece I was going to do, this one stuck out to me because I personally like to doodle, and this piece looks like some of the textures and shapes that I would doodle. The purpose of this project will introduce the ideas of motif and contrast and reinforce the concepts of pattern and texture. The materials that are needed for this piece are a piece of white construction paper, a pencil, and a black marker.  This project not only helps reinorce a concept discussed in first grade, it also shows the importance of the principle of contrast in a work of art.

To start this piece, you first have to explain to the students that thie project involves very light pencil lines to tessellate the page. It is important for the students to understand that they should barely see their lines. The patterns and texture require repetition, and you can’t repeat a motif enough if the area is too small. The students are to fill each shape with a pattern or texture, using a black marker to fill one of the shapes with a repeated motif, like a dot. Things like letter, numbers, and even punctuation are good marks that can be used to create a pattern or a texture. Throughout this piece, it is also important to go over terms like contrast and difference with the students because the mpst important kind of contrast for this project is a constast of value. Even though this project looks simple and fun, it can also be somewhat time consuming. This project is nice because it only requires a black marker, so it is easy for the students to take home to work on as well. Like I said, although this project seems simple and easy, it really teaches the kids a lot about the elements and principles of art.
