When I went home for Thanksgiving break, my sister in the 2nd grade introduced me to a fun and interactive website called starfall.com. When I say “introduced,” I really mean BUGGED ME until I finally opened it for her.
I had no idea what starfall.com was. I thought it was some kind of online coloring site, because my sister LOVES to color. When I saw that it was website dedicated solely to reading activities for kids, I got so excited.
The website is pure genius! The site is great for young children because it is organized and easy to navigate. It is very well vivid and colorful also. Another great thing about starfall.com is that the child gets to create their own avatar so that they see themselves going through all of their reading adventures! I must say, I even created my own avatar and completed some of the great activities.
It is obvious that this site is used within school systems, because my niece in the 1st grade from Wisconsin was in town for the holiday and knew all about starfall.com. There is no wonder why this program is so popular in the school. It is fun that the kids don’t get tired of it.
I know that this website would be quite a resource for children with special learning needs who can access it. My younger sister is in a special education classroom and her teacher said that it works wonders for his students. I just wish that they had it when I was younger and first learning how to read!
I’m a special education major, and I want to look at that sight as a possible resource for my students. Interactive programs like that have been shown to raise scores for those students using the sites.
