Iris Module: Understanding the Acting-Out Cycle

I just completed the Iris module “Understand the Acting-Out Cycle.”  This module was my favorite by far.  I wish I woud have done this module for my first outside activity because it would have helped me a lot in my classroom experience.

I learned a plethora of information about each phase in the acting-out cycle including:  calm, trigger, agitation, acceleration, peak, de-escalation, and recovery.

The most interesting phase that I learned about was the acceleration phase. I learned that in that phase, it is important not to get into little arguments with the student, (because that is most likely what they want you to do), and that a big help could be just to give the student a small task and walk away.

I will use the strategies that I learned in this module often as a teacher, and even when I student teach, I will be much more prepared to interact with students during the acting-out cycle.
