Three Lessons Learned

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

English 110 has been a very good experience for me.  I have a learned some lessons that will help me all throughout college.  But one of the major lessons I learned is that if you just explain everthing then its hard not to have a succesfull paper because even if your idea is far fetched or whacky but if you really can explain your thoughts then you will be succesfully not just in english but in life.  So portraying your thoughts is one keys I have learned so far. Another lesson this year if you can pick a topic you care about or interested in the paper will take care of itself it will not be a hassle.  I always knew that but i got some topics that i could relate to or were interested it in and i saw the results and the papers seemed very natural.  Finally the most important lesson I learned this year in english is to take your time with wrting.  I used to just crank out papers and say i will work on them when I’ m done.  But if you really put in the work in the beginning the results will come. I learned a lot in english and the information I learned will help me for the rest of my life.  So far english has been a very good experience for me and im really happy to be in this class.

Childhood Toy

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

While growing up I played with a lot of different toys.  One of my favorites was actions figures i used to make them fight each other and imagine i was one then.  Another toy I remeber vividly in my chilhood was a minuature basketball hoop and I used to pretend I was Micheal Jordan.  But there is one toy that will always have my heart and that is the original playstation video game console.   I remeber it like yesterday when i got for christmas I was so happy.  I used to spend hours upon hours playing.  I remeber all the games i used to play like Madden, Crash Bandicoot, Basketball Games, I played it all.  It was something that just captured my mind as lame as that sounds i just truly enjoyed.  I still play video games and there fun but there will never recapture the love I had for the playstation.

More Testing More Learning

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

I think O’Malley’s essay “More Testing More Learning” is a very good essay that I totally agree with.  O’Malley’s thesis statement is that professors gave more test instead of two a semester than it would put less pressure on the students and it will help them psychologically and intellectually.   One of his main points was that it does not create frequent studying for so it fails to inspire students best performance. Another point to his essay was that the current system cause unnecessary stress for students. I feel like O’Malley is correct in his theory but there was some objections.  One of those objections was that short exams take too much time for professors to read and grade. Another was these exams take up to much valuable class time.  But O’Malley  countered back by offering alternatives to the situation.  For instance he said that the schools should implement study skill programs.  I feel like O’Mally had a great essay that was very accurate and should be listen to by professors.

Problems in my Community

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

I live in a very nice suburb in Cleveland so there is not to many serious problems. But there are problems. I feel like there is a big drug problem for young teens it seemed like everyone in my high school smoked. This might not be a good essay topic because its a big issue for a four page paper.  But its important to me because I first hand have seen  what drugs can do to a person.  Another issue in my community is feel like there is nothing to do for teens.  I feel thats important because not having nothing to do for teens only leads to bad things. This could be a good issue for the essay but i might have  Another issue in my community is lack of jobs it seems like a lot people are losing there jobs which is important to me because it hurts the economy and it has effected some of my love ones. I also  feel like this issue in way to big to write a paper on. Those are some of the issues that are important to me in my community

Response to Statsky’s Essay

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

I feel Statsky’s essay “Children Need to Play, Not Compete” was very interesting and had some good points.  I felt it was a good essay because it was clear and had very good main supports they were backed by very credible sources.   The thesis of her essay was young children should not play in competive sports from sometime overzealous parents.  She had four main points for her argument.  The first one was the physical and physcologic damgage of playing sports. The second idea was thats it counterproductive for the children. Third she argued that use their children to fullfill fantasties of their own.  Finally her last argument was most likely that children bodies are simply just not ready.  What also makes Statsky’s article good were here counterarguments and rebuttals. Her counterargument were that competiveness is needed in life and sports can defintinely achive that.   But overal I feel like Statsky’s essay was very good and was clear decise even though i do not agree with her.
