For this project, I am choosing the children’s book ‘The Giving Tree’ by Shel Silverstein. If you haven’t read it, it’s about a tree who loves a boy very much. The boy plays on the tree and hangouts with the tree everyday. As the boy grows up, he stops coming around as much and when he does he doesn’t have time to play. He comes to the tree and asks for a house, so the tree gives the boy branches to build a house. Then the boy asks for a boat and the tree gives up her trunk for the boy. Then the boy comes back in his old age and needs nothing more but a stump to sit on and rest. I think this book represents people that children look up to, like their parents or grandparents. I think there are several meanings behind the book. It has a lot to do with the environment,  not being greedy and always being thankful of people who are willing to give to you and it also shows how the tree is still happy to the end because she was able to give something to the one she loved.  The only characters are the tree and the boy. It’s a very simplistic design with white pages and black line art of the tree and the boy.  The only color in the book is on the cover. Two shades of green and one shade of red.

The above photos show the cover, and an example of one of the pages inside the book. I want to design my poster with the same simple design as the book. I will use the same green and red as the book cover too. One line that is repeated throughout the book is ‘and the tree was happy’. I think I will include that in my poster as well because it is emphasized and it seams to be the main point. Below, are my thumbnails of a few ideas I have for my poster design.
