“Yet land in Second Life was not just a metaphor for storage on a server; it was a form of a place with econimic and political consequensues.”
This Quote comes from Ch 8 under the property section. I find this quote interesting along with the entire section of this chapter because it illustrates to me how Second Life imitates the actual world through this notion. The land in second Life is where creative things take place. Building, placing, etc. It is not just storage, but a place that an avatar calls home, or relaxes. I think along with economic and political consequences, there are also emotional consequences. People on Second Life get emotionally attached to their property, there stuff, and their land. We saw this is a previous chapter about the store and the nightclub owner feuding amongst each-other. Second Life property is much different than what you see on other social networking sites. There you upload your pictures or whatever onto some server and thats all they are. You probably keep copies of them on your computer anyways. As in a virtual world, you create your stuff you can set a vaule to it, sell things, modify things to your liking. Its like burger king- have it your way. haha. Well some stuff at least. All-in-all, I personally have been dealing with land and property issues with the swim up bar. Our entire group has. We only have a limited amount of land and can only rez a certain amount of objects. Although we are proud at what we have created, we would still like to put some of the cool objects that we have purchased in the bar, but we can’t, and their seems to be some emotional connection with this where we are so adamant of finding a way to rez these objects because we really want this bar to look awesome. We know we can make it better with all the cool things we made, and bought.
