Fortune Cookie Writer

Weird Jobs March 30th, 2010

Have you ever considered making your own fortune cookies? Well, there is actually a way to make money writing fortunes and packaging fortune cookies yourself. The best way to begin might be to just start up your own business. That means you will be writing up your own fortunes as well as making the cookies. This is a great way to start working for yourself and become an entreprenuer. The first thing you can do is write tons of fortunes or sayings that you will put inside the cookies. You could type them out and print them. Each strip should be about 4 inches long and ½ inch wide. So you can configure the appropriate measurements on your writing program and type and cut out each fortune. It would be best to keep sayings positive and appropriate for everyone.

Once you make your cookies, (I have included those instructions below) the next step would be to call up some Asian restaurants and try and sell your cookies in bulk. If a decent or even discounted price is offered, then it could raise your chances of getting a sale. It is hard to get a median salary for fortune cookie writers because the job market is not that documented but I have heard that each fortune is worth about $0.25. So the next thing you might be wondering is how exactly do you make a fortune cookie. I have included a recipe with all of the steps below so you can get a head start on your business!

Fortune Cookie Recipe- Yields about 20 cookies (Foodnetwork.com & Allrecipes.com)

2 egg whites

6 tablespoons butter

¼ cup sugar

½ cup flour

¼ teaspoon vanilla extract

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • You will need to create a stencil to make the shape of your cookies. This can be done by cutting a plastic coffee lid (or anything you feel is an appropriate substitute) into the shape of a 3-inch disk. So from the center of the disk to the edge will be 1 ½ inches all around.
  • Next, whip the egg whites until they are stiff and then chill.
  • In a mixer, cream the butter, then add the sugar and continue to mix.
  • Blend in the flour, and then add vanilla and mix.
  • Add chilled egg whites and mix on low until batter is smooth.
  • Place parchment paper over the stencil and spread the batter over the paper to shape the cookies.
  • Put the shaped cookies onto a greased cookie sheet and put into the preheated oven for 7-8 minutes, until golden brown.
  • Now very quickly remove from the oven and use a spatula to place cookies upside down on a wooden board. Quickly place fortune strip in the middle of the cookie. Now fold the cookie in half, then place the folded edge across the rim of a glass cup and pull the edges down, one inside the cup and the other outside.
  • Placed the finished cookies in a muffin tin to retain shape.

Tips

*Start baking only a few at a time, until you get the hang of it, because you must mold the cookies before they cool. So you don’t have much time!
