Huron, Ohio – United State House of Representative member Mary Kaptur recently attended a ceremony at Bowling Green State University Firelands College to present a United States flag to honor the memory and contributions of the late George Mylander ’58, ’70, ’03 (Hon.).

“His contributions to the College were remarkable, but it is equally important to recognize his contributions to his country as a serviceman and veteran,” said Kaptur who represents the 9th Congressional District.

Kaptur is nationally known for her successful effort to authorize construction of the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., and she is a leader in our nation’s commitment to ensure proper care and compensation for veterans and their families.  She has dedicated efforts throughout her tenure in Congress to put America’s veterans and their families first.

“He was a true patriot and when he attended community events, he proudly wore his veteran’s hat,” added Kaptur.

Mylander was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the 3rd Infantry Division and a lifelong member of the American Legion.  In 1999, for service to his country and community he was enshrined in the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame.

Kaptur presented the flag, which previously flew over the United States Capital, to BGSU Board of Trustees Chairman David Levey and BGSU Firelands Dean Andy Kurtz.

“We all walk on the backs of the giants who came before us and George Mylander was a giant.  He helped to build this College and we would not be here but for George,” said Levey.  He added that the flag will be kept in a place of honor for all to view.

Mylanders contributions to BGSU, both personally and through the Mylander Foundation, totaled more than $3 million.  His impact was most prominently felt at the BGSU Firelands campus where funds were directed to a leadership gift to the completion of the Cedar Point Center, development of the McBride Arboretum, and, most recently, a $1 million leadership gift to the Allied Health & Sciences Project.

“George Mylander was without a doubt, one of the most passionate alumni of Bowling Green State University that I have had the pleasure of knowing. His legacy is evident throughout our campus and he will be remembered for the lasting and meaningful impact he had on our students,” said Kurtz.

A long-time educator, Mylander’s greatest passion was for student scholarships.  He established the George L. Mylander Scholarship at BGSU Firelands, the George L. Mylander Alumni Laureate Scholarship, and the Mylander Foundation Scholarship. Collectively the three scholarships have aided 157 students in reaching their academic goals.

Mylander passed away on January 3, 2016.

BGSU Firelands to Host College Goal Sunday

Huron, Ohio – On Sunday, Feb. 14, beginning at 2 p.m. Bowling Green State University Firelands College will host the local portion of College Goal Sunday, a state-wide event with the goal of helping to prepare students and their families for the financial challenges of college.

The free event, presented by the Ohio Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators and endorsed by the Ohio Board of Regents, assists students and parents with completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The FAFSA is the federal application that is required to receive federal financial aid including the Federal Pell Grant and student loans as well as the need-based state grants.

The FAFSA is the key to funding a college education and helping families to overcome financial barriers that otherwise prevent students from attending the institution in which they are interested.  Studies show that a student is 50 percent more likely to attend college when they complete the FAFSA.

“College financial aid can be very intimidating to students and parents,” said BGSU Firelands Director of Enrollment Management & Student Retention Services Deb Divers.  “College Goal Sunday is an excellent opportunity to talk about financial aid and have trained professional help filling out the FAFSA forms.”

Volunteers from BGSU Firelands, neighboring colleges, and other educational institutions, will provide support, guidance, and encouragement as the families navigate the on-line process.

Held at 56 sites across the state, in 2015 BGSU Firelands attracted one of the largest crowds with nearly 200 guests including close to 100 college-bound students.

While walk-ins are welcome, registration is encouraged and can be completed at www.ohiocollegegoalsunday.org

For additional information on the College Goal Sunday at BGSU Firelands, please contact the Office of Financial Aid at 419-372-0655 or the Ohio Board of Regents at 800-233-6734.
