Zahler Named Assistant Dean at BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Bowling Green State University Firelands College has promoted Megan Zahler to the position of assistant dean for strategic enrollment planning.

Working closely with leadership at both the Bowling Green and Firelands campuses, the assistant dean will supervise all admissions and student services functions of the College.

“This position will allow for a coordination of services and initiatives that, historically, has been difficult to achieve. I am confident that bringing these two units together under Megan’s leadership and expertise will yield immediate results,” said BGSU Firelands Dean Andy Kurtz.

Zahler has been at BGSU Firelands since 2013 when she was hired as the coordinator of career services.  She most recently served as the interim director of strategic enrollment management, replacing long-time director Deborah Divers who retired in February 2017.

Prior to joining BGSU Firelands, Zahler was the associate director of the undergraduate division at The Wharton School, Philadelphia, and coordinator of career services and student life at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Zahler earned a doctorate degree in higher education administration from Widener University, Chester, Pa., a master’s degree in higher education from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, and a bachelor’s degree in English literature from The College of New Jersey, Ewing Township.

MEDIA ALERT:  All reporters and photographers are invited to attend the BGSU Firelands 32nd Commencement Ceremonies on Saturday, May 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the Cedar Point Center at the Huron, Ohio, campus.

BGSU Firelands 32nd Commencement Ceremonies

Huron, Ohio – On Saturday, May 6, Bowling Green State University Firelands College will conduct the 32nd Commencement Ceremonies featuring keynote speaker William MacDonald.  BGSU Firelands will recognize 225 students who earned degrees at the campus during the 2016-2017 academic year.

“This is the culmination of a great deal of hard work and sacrifice for our students who will be graduating this evening, and we are proud that they have achieved their goals,” said BGSU Firelands Dean Andy Kurtz.

The graduating class includes 195 associate degree candidates and 30 bachelor’s degree candidates.  In addition, the College will also be recognizing ten area high school students in the College Credit Plus program who have gained enough college credit to earn an associate degree concurrently with their high school diploma.

Degree candidates range in age from 17 to 61 and they represent many areas of Ohio.  Forty-five  candidates will graduate with academic honors, including two students with perfect 4.0 grade point averages.

MacDonald, a BGSU graduate who attended classes on the BGSU Firelands campus, will address the students as they prepare to graduate.

“We are delighted to have Dr. MacDonald as the commencement speaker.  He is an outstanding role model for the graduates and an excellent example of the level of success which can be achieved with an education from BGSU,” said Kurtz.

MacDonald earned three degrees from BGSU, culminating with a doctorate degree in sociology.  He is currently the Executive Dean of Regional Campuses at The Ohio State University where he is responsible for the administrative functions for five campuses and nearly 7,000 students.

MacDonald has published articles in a variety of scholarly journals, received funding from the National Science Foundation to support his research, and was named a 1997-1998 Young Scholar in American Religion by the Center for the Study of Religion and American Culture at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.
