HURON, Ohio – From 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 15, Bowling Green State University Firelands College will host the 45th Annual College Night.

High school students and adults will have the opportunity to obtain literature and speak with admissions representatives from a wide variety of colleges, universities and schools of nursing.

Information tables from more than 60 colleges and universities will be in the main conference room of the Cedar Point Center.  The program is free and open to the public.  Parking is available in the Cedar Point Center lot adjacent to the building.

Forty-Nine institutions of higher education in Ohio will participate in the program this year. Colleges and universities participating include: Ashland University, Baldwin-Wallace University, BGSU Firelands, BGSU Firelands/LCCC Nursing Program, BGSU Firelands/UT Nursing Program, Bluffton University, Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green State University ROTC, Brown Mackie College, Capital University, Cedarville College, Cleveland Institute of Art, Cleveland State University, Defiance College, Ehove Career Center, Heidelberg University, Hocking Technical College, John Carroll University, Kent State, Lake Erie College, Lorain County Community College, Malone University, Mercy College, Miami University, Mount Vernon Nazarene University, Muskingum University, Notre Dame College, Ohio Northern University, Ohio Technical College, Ohio University, OSU Agricultural Technical Institute, Owens Community College, Sandusky Area Health Education Center, Shawnee State University, Terra State Community College, The Ohio State University, Tiffin University, University of Akron, University of Cincinnati, University of Findlay, University of Mount Union, University of Toledo, Urbana University, Ursuline College, Virginia Marti College of Art & Design, Walsh University, Wittenberg University, Wright State University, and Youngstown State University.

This year numerous out of state colleges will be represented including: Adrian College, Ball State University, Central Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, Gannon University, Hillsdale College, Kendall College of Arts & Design, Madonna University, Manchester University, Michigan State University, Northwood University, Siena Heights University, Trine University, United States Merchant Marine Academy, University of Saint Francis, and Wheeling Jesuit University.

Sandusky resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Ryan David Ebert of Sandusky has received the Laura A. Kautz Memorial Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. He will receive $1,000 towards tuition for the 2015-2016 academic year.

Created in memory of Laura Kautz, the scholarship is available to a full-time student in his/her second year of the radiologic technology program who is currently completing a clinical rotation at Firelands Regional Medical Center. The recipient must have a minimum 3.4 GPA.

Ebert is a 2012 graduate of Perkins High School.

He is a senior majoring in radiologic technology at BGSU Firelands.

He is the son of David and Sandra Ebert of Sandusky.

This endowed scholarship is available to students who reside in Erie County.

Danda is a 2015 graduate of Edison High School where she was active in cross country, track, basketball, Spanish Club, Interact Club, National Honor Society, Student Council, choir, and Varsity E Club.

Huron, Ohio – Shelbie N. Close of Bellevue has received the William J. Parker Memorial Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. She will receive $1,660 towards tuition for the 2015-2016 academic year.

This endowed award is variable and the criteria for the award is financial need.

Close is a 2015 graduate of Seneca East High School where she earned an Honors Diploma and the National Machinery Citizenship Award. While in high school she was active in National Honor Society, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, volleyball, and played the violin. In her spare time, she volunteers at Bellevue Hospital.

She is a freshman at BGSU Firelands.

This endowed scholarship was established in 2004 by the Jan and Michele Graves family. The recipient must enroll at BGSU Firelands within one year of high school and have graduated from a high school in Erie, Huron, or Ottawa counties. Entering freshman must have at least a 3.2 GPA and returning college students must have at least a 3.0 GPA. Preference is given to a freshman, but traditional age sophomores will also be considered. Recipients must be actively involved in outside activities either on campus or within the community.

Janka is a 2015 graduate of Bellevue High School where she was on the honor roll. During high school she earned several awards and recognitions including On Stage Rookie of the Year, Outstanding State Band Competition Member, and she was recognized as a scholar athlete.

She is a sophomore majoring in computer sciences at BGSU Firelands where she is a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success.

Huron, Ohio – Allison Elizabeth Stang of Norwalk has received the Janell J. Graves to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. She will receive $1,700 towards tuition for the 2015-2016 academic year.

This scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating senior of either Norwalk or St. Paul high schools. Academic achievement of a level promising success in college is the chief qualification.

Shenefield is a 2015 graduate of Norwalk High School and EHOVE where he was on the honor roll and inducted into National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society. While in high school he was named student of the nine weeks and was a member of the Art Club, Mavericks Robotics Team, and Business Professionals of America.

He is a freshman majoring in computer science at BGSU Firelands.

He is the son of Michelle Braley of Norwalk.

Huron, Ohio – On Sept. 9, 2015, the musical group Breakline will provide their spirited brand of entertainment for the ElderCollege fall semester kickoff at Bowling Green State University Firelands College.

Breakline started as three friends ‘kitchen pickin’ and traveling to winter festivals and has evolved into a unique presentational group.  Playing traditional favorites, as well as bringing to the stage songs from the 20s’ and 30s’, the group appeals to a wide variety of audience members.

The kickoff of the ElderCollege fall semester is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 9, from 1:30-3:45 p.m., in the Cedar Point Center at BGSU Firelands. The event is free and open to the public.

ElderCollege is an independent organization supported by BGSU Firelands. With more than 150 members, it is designed to promote lifelong learning for adults 50 years of age and beyond from all educational and socio-economic backgrounds.

There are no academic requirements to join ElderCollege, and there are no tests or grades. Individuals simply attend for the enjoyment of learning.

Thirty-five classes are planned for the fall semester.  Topics range from history to geology and national current events to local government.  Several events include tours to areas of interest in the community.

Individuals can enroll in ElderCollege for a fee of $70 per semester or $110 for two semesters, which entitles them to attend unlimited classes during the selected period.  Non-members can also participate by paying a minimal fee per class – typically $20.

Huron, Ohio – Bowling Green State University Firelands College will be open on Saturday, Aug. 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to assist students in registering for classes or completing the financial aid process for Fall Semester which begins on Monday, Aug. 24.

Offices open include admissions, financial aid, registration, academic and student services, the Computer Lab, the Teaching and Learning Center, the Library, and the Bookstore.

Personnel will be available on August 22 to assist with the completion of current applications, class registration, finalizing financial aid, or other last minute administrative details.  Students will also be able to purchase their books, stop by the computer lab, and meet with staff in the Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) and Library.
