Huron, Ohio – Bowling Green State University Firelands College was notified earlier this month that the diagnostic medical sonography program has been awarded initial accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.
CAAHEP is the largest programmatic accreditor in the health sciences field. In collaboration with its Committees on Accreditation, CAAHEP reviews and accredits more than 2,000 educational programs in 26 health science occupations.
The diagnostic medical sonography program was first offered at BGSU Firelands in 2012. A diagnostic medical sonographer is a highly skilled professional who creates images of structures inside the body using soundwaves. Sonographers are responsible for the independent operation of sonographic equipment, and for performing and communicating findings of the examinations to physicians.
The two-year associate degree program is one of the most popular at the BGSU Firelands campus. Entrance into the program is highly competitive.
Diagnostic medical sonographers are in high demand and employment in this field is projected to grow 39 percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average projected growth of all occupations collectively. Salaries vary by geographical location, however, the US Department of Labor Statics list the annual median salary for diagnostic medical sonographers at $60,350.
