Didelot Named Distinguished Teacher at BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Bowling Green State University Firelands College honored one of its best at the 45th Annual Recognition Program held Friday, April 25, in the Cedar Point Center. Julie Didelot, Castalia, a sociology lecturer at BGSU Firelands, was honored as the 2014 Distinguished Teacher.
The award is one of the highest honors the college can bestow as the recipients of the Distinguished Teacher Award are nominated by students and selected by a committee of their peers.
“Ms. Didelot has been an immensely effective teacher with a wonderful sociological imagination that inspires her students to critically evaluate the common sense of assumptions that dominate our public discourse. Both her students and colleagues rave about her presence in the classroom and her ability to not only teach, but inspire her students,” said a nominator.
Didelot has been employed at BGSU Firelands since 2007, starting as an instructor and promoted to lecturer in 2012. Her courses include Deviance and Social Control, Social Problems, Social Science Inquiry of Gender, Introduction to Women’s Studies, and others. She also taught at Terra State Community College from 1999 through 2007.
“The manner in which she carries herself, her incredibly engaging presence and the passion with which she shares her sociological insight with her students makes Ms. Didelot one of the shining stars on this campus,” said a nominator.
Didelot has presented at the North Central Sociological Association’s annual meeting on three occasions, twice presented at the Association for Humanist Sociology’s annual meeting, and once at the American Society of Criminology’s annual meeting.
Didelot currently serves on the BGSU President’s Advisory Council on Diversity and Inclusion, a position she has held since 2012. She has previously served as the HOPE Club advisor and the Women’s Resource Group advisor. Didelot has also been a member of College Council since 2012 and served on a variety of committees during her tenure at BGSU.
Didelot has also been a strong advocate for V-Day, a global movement to raise awareness about violence against women and girls.
She organized the campus V-Day activities in 2010 and in 2012 and has sponsored community events to raise funds for the Safe Harbor Domestic Violence Shelter, Sandusky, and the V-Day Global Fund. Her V-Day efforts also earned her the Feminist Falcon Award from BGSU in 2011.
“No one can question Julie Didelot’s sensitivity and responsiveness to students inside and outside of the classroom. She has been involved in numerous charitable and social events at the college and participates in ways that always communicate the highest level of ethical standards and values,” said another nominator.
Didelot earned a master’s degree in college student personnel and a bachelor’s degree in sociology from BGSU. She also holds a graduate certificate in women studies and is currently completing a doctoral degree in sociology from BGSU.
Didelot has been nominated for the Distinguished Teacher award three times.
Criteria for the Distinguished Teacher Award includes scholarly knowledge of the subject matter, careful organization and preparation for courses, an ability to generate enthusiasm for the field and for learning, demonstrated ability to stimulate the intellect of students so as to foster skills in critical thinking and independent analysis, ability to communicate the subject matter in a clear, effective manner, utilization of a diversity of teaching methods/techniques, and sensitivity and responsiveness to students, both in and out of the class context.
In addition, the candidate must have teaching experience at BGSU Firelands for at least two years prior to the year of the nomination and candidates must not have received the award within the past five years.
