Proof by David Auburn at BGSU Firelands College Theatre

Huron, Ohio – Bowling Green State University Firelands College Theatre opens its 45th season next month with the presentation of “Proof” by David Auburn, directed by Grechen Lynne Wingerter.
“Proof” was the winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, 2001 Tony Award for Best Play, 2001 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Best Play, and 2001 Drama Desk Award for Best New Play.
Auburn was born in Chicago, but grew up in Ohio (Akron area) until moving with his family to Arkansas in 1982. Other Auburn’s plays include “Skyscraper”, “The Journals of Mihail Sebastian”, and “The Columnist”, which recently ran on Broadway starring John Lithgow, another Ohio native.
“Proof” tells the story of Catherine, a young woman who spent years caring for her now-deceased father, a once-brilliant mathematician who struggled with mental illness. Catherine, who has inherited much of her father’s mathematical abilities, fears she has also inherited his mental instabilities.
The ensemble cast includes BGSU Firelands students, Rachel McLaughlin, Huron, playing Catherine; Kaitlyn Dissinger, Easton, Pa., playing Claire; and Cory Castelan, Bellevue, playing Hal; and veteran actor, Peter Aylward, Huron, playing Robert.
Aylward has worked professionally at such theaters as the Guthrie Theatre, Goodman Theatre, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Indiana Repertory Theatre, Kansas City Repertory Theatre, Great Lakes Theatre Festival, Cleveland Playhouse, and Utah Shakespeare Festival. He is a member of the Screen Actors’ Guild and his film credits include “The Untouchables” and “Lonely Hearts”.
The director, Wingerter, is an instructor of theatre at BGSU Firelands. Prior to arriving at BGSU Firelands, she was an adjunct instructor/guest director at Lycoming College, Williamsport, Pa., where she directed “Charley’s Aunt”, “A Doll’s House”, “The Voice of the Prairie”, “Brighton Beach Memoirs”, “Wonder of the World”, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, and “Independence.”
Wingerter has directed and stage managed for such theaters as Idaho Repertory Theatre, Shakespeare Festival, Illinois Shakespeare Festival, First Stage Milwaukee, Lifeline Theatre, Circle X Theatre Company, and Critical Mass Performance Group. She was a recipient of a 2009 Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival National Teaching Artist Grant, a 2008 KC/ACTF National Faculty Director Mentor, and a 2007 SDC Student Director Fellowship.
Technical direction is by David Gilmore, North Fairfield, and additional production staff includes Michael Holt, Huron, as lighting designer; Davy Davis, Sandusky, as scenic artist and properties coordinator; Carolyn R. Griswold, Sandusky, as costume coordinator; Bryanna Bauman, Huron, as stage manager; and Julie A. Hamann, Port Clinton, as box office manager.
Performances are scheduled for Nov. 8, 9, and 10 at 7:30 p.m. and for Nov. 11 at 2:00 p.m. in BGSU Firelands’ McBride Auditorium.
The box office (419-433-5560, ext. 2-0747 or 419-372-0747) opens at 1 p.m. on Nov. 5, and is open from 1-7 p.m. daily thereafter. Regular admissions are $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens and BGSU Firelands faculty/staff, $5 for children under 17, and $4 for BGSU Firelands students. Groups of 15 or more are $8 per person.
This production does contain some strong language and may not be suitable for young children.
