Bowling Green State University Firelands College honored one of its best at the 47th Annual Recognition Program held Friday, April 29, in the Cedar Point Center.  Victoria Kontos, Sandusky, admissions and financial aid counselor at BGSU Firelands, was honored as the 2016 Distinguished Administrative Staff member.

The award is one of the highest honors the College can bestow as the recipients of the Distinguished Administrative Staff Award are nominated by colleagues and students and selected by a committee of their peers.

“As a co-worker, Victoria is a delight to work with for her accountability, attention to detail, and sense of humor.  I have worked with her on several committees, and I can attest to her ability to lead a team to successful completion of goals,” said a nominator.

Kontos began her employment at BGSU Firelands as a secretary in the admissions office in 2009 and has had several roles including student employment coordinator and admissions and financial aid counselor.

Her responsibilities include determining students’ eligibility for admission, identifying, recruiting, enrolling, and counseling prospective students, managing the student employment program, and administering and maintaining the scholarship program which annually awards more than $150,000 to BGSU Firelands students.

“Victoria is the first person many prospective students meet from BGSU Firelands, and she is the professional, approachable, and helpful ‘face’ of our College to countless prospective high school students and families,” said a nominator.

At BGSU Firelands, Kontos is a member of the College Credit Plus Advisory Board and the Enrollment Initiatives Working Group.  She was also a member of the 2014 BGSU Leadership Institute.

She is a member of the Ohio Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators and a past recipient of the Business and Professional Women’s Organization’s Young Careerist Award.  She is also a former board member for Teen Leadership Corps.

Kontos earned a bachelor’s degree in public relations from Baldwin-Wallace College, Berea, Ohio.

Criteria for the Distinguished Administrative Staff Award includes performance above and beyond what is required by the position, providing services to the campus community and beyond which promote growth and harmony, and/or demonstrated resourcefulness in the work place that contributed to the efficiency and effectiveness of the University.

In addition, the candidate must have been employed at BGSU Firelands for multiple years with the length being contingent on employment status (full-time, part-time, retired) and candidates must not have received the award within the past three years.
