Buehrer Named Distinguished Teacher at BGSU Firelands

Bowling Green State University Firelands College honored one of its best at the 47th Annual Recognition Program held Friday, April 29, in the Cedar Point Center. Jolene Buehrer, Milan, a senior lecturer of English at BGSU Firelands, was honored as the 2016 Distinguished Teacher.
The award is one of the highest honors the College can bestow as the recipients of the Distinguished Teacher Award are nominated by students and selected by a committee of their peers.
Buehrer was recognized and nominated by students for her enthusiastic approach to teaching and for the passion she demonstrates in teaching her subject matters.
“Dr. Buehrer has an amazing dedication to her students and I am proud to say I was one. College is just a stepping stone to what comes next in life and Dr. Buehrer has instilled in me the confidence to know I will succeed,” said one of her nominators.
Buehrer has been employed at BGSU Firelands since 2000 starting as an adjunct faculty member and becoming full-time faculty in 2003. She is currently a senior lecturer and the chair of the Humanities Department. Previously she taught at Mount Mary College, Yankton, S.D. She also has more than 15 years of experience in public relations at Sacred Heart Health Services, Yankton.
Her greatest teaching interests reside in Native American cultures, an interest she has fostered since her time at the University of South Dakota. She teaches courses in Native American studies and film, and she provided lectures to the ElderCollege program on the subject matter.
In a recent course, Buehrer mentored her students on a service learning project which was successful in collecting a semi truck load full of clothing and household goods which they then delivered to residents on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.
“Dr. Buehrer is very passionate on the courses she teaches. As a student, I could really tell she enjoys teaching and she makes learning informative and fun. I have taken four of her classes and enjoyed them all,” said another nominator.
Buehrer has also provided extensive service to the University including membership on the Bowling Green Perspective and BGSU Connecting Undergraduate Experience committees, the BGSU Firelands Budget Committee, Academic Affairs Committee, and College Council, and several department level committees.
Outside of the University, Buehrer has served on the Milan-Berlin Library District Board of Trustees since 2007, the last three years as president. She is also actively involved in the Milan-Berlin Friends of Library and assists with fund-raising activities for the organization.
Buehrer earned her doctoral degree in American literature from the University of South Dakota, Vermillion, a master’s degree in English from University of South Dakota, and a bachelor’s degree in English from Mount Mary College.
Criteria for the Distinguished Teacher Award includes scholarly knowledge of the subject matter, careful organization and preparation for courses, an ability to generate enthusiasm for the field and for learning, demonstrated ability to stimulate the intellect of students so as to foster skills in critical thinking and independent analysis, ability to communicate the subject matter in a clear, effective manner, utilization of a diversity of teaching methods/techniques, and sensitivity and responsiveness to students, both in and out of the class context.
In addition, the candidate must have teaching experience at BGSU Firelands for at least two years prior to the year of the nomination and candidates must not have received the award within the past five years.
