Amherst resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Andrea L. Hama of Amherst has received the Dean’s University Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. She will receive $2,500 towards tuition for the 2015-2016 academic year.

The Dean’s University Scholarship award, established in 1998, was made possible through a generous contribution from the Frost-Parker Foundation and a matching gift from the BGSU Alumni Association. This scholarship can be awarded annually to an outstanding BGSU Firelands junior who will transition to the Bowling Green campus in the fall.

Hama is a 2014 graduate of Amherst Steele High School.

She is a freshman majoring in art education at BGSU Firelands where she has been on the Dean’s List.

She is the daughter of Kenneth and Carla Hama of Amherst.

Milan resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Tanner John Whitacre of Milan has received the Dr. George F. Linn Outstanding Undergraduate Teacher Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. He will receive $1,668 towards tuition for the 2015-2016 academic year.

This scholarship, in memory of Dr. George F. Linn, prominent educator who taught in Huron and Erie counties, is available to students interested in the teaching profession. This scholarship is awarded to a valedictorian, salutatorian, or like meritorious scholar who expresses an interest in math and science. A recommendation from an area school administrator is required for this scholarship.

Whitacre is a 2015 graduate of Edison High School where he earned an honors diploma, and academic letter, and was named student of the quarter in math and science. While in high school he was active in bowling and band.

He is a freshman majoring in secondary education in math and science at BGSU Firelands.

He is the son of Jeff and Brenda Whitacre of Milan.

Fremont resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Tracy Sue Weis of Fremont has received the Laura C. Keller Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. She will receive $856 towards tuition for the 2015-2016 academic year.

Laura Keller received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Bowling Green State University in education. During her teaching career, she taught pre-school, kindergarten, grades 1 through 8 and served as an assistant college administrator. She currently is involved in organizations centered on improving education both domestically and internationally. She continues to be active in the BGSU President’s Club. This scholarship was established to promote quality education and to increase the significant influence of teachers in today’s society. This scholarship is available to a continuing student. The recipient must possess a 3.3 GPA, be pursuing a major in the college of education and human development, and demonstrate leadership skills as exhibited by past or current extracurricular, civic, or work involvement.

Weis is a 2004 graduate of Fremont Ross High.

She is a senior majoring in inclusive early childhood education at BGSU Firelands where she has been on the Dean’s List and a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success.

Norwalk resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Marina Dolores Abel of Norwalk has received the Shelley Lynn Roesch Memorial Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. She will receive $961 towards tuition for the 2015-2016 academic year.

This endowed award was established in 2010 by Shelley Roesch’s father, Wayne Roesch of Milan. Shelley was born in 1981 with cerebral palsy and was challenged by autism and seizures. She and her father created special memories visiting the grounds of BGSU Firelands where her father received both his associate and bachelor’s degrees. Shelley passed away in 2009 at the age of 28. The recipient of this award must be, or plan to be, a part-time student pursuing a degree at BGSU Firelands. Preference is given to a student who is planning to teach in the field of special education or a related field, or a student who is identified as a special needs individual.

Abel is a 2012 graduate of Saint Paul High School.

She is a sophomore majoring in inclusive early childhood education at BGSU Firelands where she has been on the Dean’s List and a member of the Firelands Chapter of the Ohio Student Education Association.

She is the daughter of Gary and Lisa Abel of Norwalk.

Sandusky resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Kayla McKenzie Hodgkinson of Sandusky has received the Mary L. Fenker Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. She will receive $785 towards tuition for the 2015-2016 academic year.

This scholarship, given by a generous donation from Mary L. Fenker of Sandusky, is available to full- and part-time students from Erie County. Recipients must major in nursing or early childhood education, maintain at least a 3.0 GPA, and demonstrate financial need. Community and school involvement is also considered.

Hodgkinson is a 2015 graduate of Sandusky High School where she was a scholar athlete and involved in softball, volleyball, Mat Stats, National Honor Society, and Big Brother’s Big Sister’s.

She is a freshman majoring in nursing at BGSU Firelands.

Fremont resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Brianna Jewel Frost of Fremont has received the Ruth Frost Parker Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. She will receive $1,400 towards tuition for the 2015-2016 academic year.

This endowed scholarship is available to both full- and part-time, non-traditional students who reside in Erie County.

Frost is a 2015 graduate of Fremont Ross where she was a member of National Honor Society, earned metals at the Academic Olympics, and served as a representative for Student of the Month Teen Leadership Corps.

She is a freshman majoring in diagnostic medical sonography at BGSU Firelands.

She is the daughter of Kenneth and Julie Frost of Fremont.
