Huron, Ohio – Thirty-three third through eighth grade students from Sandusky City Schools will spend part of their summer vacation learning about criminal justice, chemistry, biology, and anatomy at the Bowling Green State University Firelands College campus through research into a zombie apocalypse.

The creative program is part of the Dorn Fellowship program which is a partnership between BGSU, BGSU Firelands, and Sandusky City Schools Regional Center for Advanced Academic Studies. The purpose of SCS Regional Center for Advanced Academic Studies is to provide a world class education to students through innovative curriculum and instructional models designed to meet individual needs.

Working with SCS teachers and faculty from BGSU and BGSU Firelands, the students will investigate topics such as social issues related to disease outbreak, blood infections and identification, and environment contamination. The program will include educational segments in college laboratories and field research.

On Monday, students participated in a mock bone excavation. Utilizing the bones they found, students reconstructed a human body and conducted bone sample testing to determine the gender, age of the body, and even gained insight into what occupation the person had while alive.

The week-long educational event will culminate in a presentation by the students on their emergency management plan for dealing with a zombie apocalypse.

The Dorn Fellowship summer experience is in its second year. The innovative and entertaining zombie concept is the brain child of BGSU Firelands faculty members Tracy McGinley, criminal justice, Seth Gardner and Christine Genovese, biology, Subha Nagarajan, chemistry; BGSU faculty member Matt Partin, marine biology; and SCS coordinator of the Regional Center for Advanced Academic Studies Tara Toft.
