Huron resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Terri L. Horvatich of Huron has received the George L. Mylander Schoalrship at BGSU Firelands. Horvatich will receive $2,032 towards tuition for the 2014-2015 academic year.

This scholarship is offered to a student who is a resident of Sandusky or other Erie County communities.

Horvatich is a 1981 graduate of Norwalk High School.

She is a senior majoring in criminal justice at BGSU Firelands where she has been on the Dean’s List and maintained a 4.0 GPA. She was inducted into the National Society of Leadership and Success and Sigma Alphi Pi. She was awarded the Theatre Award for Outstanding Participant for 2013-2014.

She is the daughter of Howard and Faye Shields.

Sandusky resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Hannah M. Jesberger of Sandusky has received the George L. Mylander Schoalrship at BGSU Firelands. Jesberger will receive $2,032 towards tuition for the 2014-2015 academic year.

This scholarship is offered to a student who is a resident of Sandusky or other Erie County communities.

Jesberger is a 2013 graduate of Perkins High School where she earned several awards including Outstanding Senior Spanish Award, ABCD Award, and she was named a scholar athlete.

She is a sophomore majoring in early childhood education and Spanish at BGSU Firelands where she has been on the Dean’s List and is a member of the honors college program. She was the recipient of the ElderCollege Educator Award.

She is the daughter of Philip and Lori Jesberger.

Bellevue resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Colleen M. Valko of Bellevue has received the Grace L. Keller Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Valko will receive $856 towards tuition for the 2014-2015 academic year.

This endowed scholarship, created in honor of Grace Keller, supports her commitment to the field of education and recognizes the crucial and valuable role that BGSU Firelands holds in the community. The scholarship is available to a continuing student at BGSU Firelands. The recipient must possess a minimum 3.3 GPA and be studying in the College of Education and Human Development.

Valko is a 2012 graduate of Bellevue High School.

She is a junior majoring in inclusive early childhood education at BGSU Firelands.

She is the daughter of Greg and Linda Valko of Bellevue.

New London resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Kyle Anthony Tyler Shepard of New London has received the Janell J. Graves Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Shepard will receive $1,633 towards tuition for the 2014-2015 academic year.

This endowed scholarship was established in 2004 by the Jan and Michele Graves family. The recipient must enroll at BGSU Firelands within one year of high school and have graduated from a high school in Erie, Huron, or Ottawa counties. Entering freshman must have at least a 3.2 GPA and returning college students must have at least a 3.0 GPA. Preference is given to a freshman, but traditional age sophomores will also be considered. Recipients must be actively involved in outside activities either on campus or within the community.

Shepard is a 2014 graduate of New London where he was on the honor roll and participated in track, wrestling, and cross country.  While in high school Shepard attended BGSU Firelands and concurrently earned a high school dipolma and an Associates Degree of Science.

He is a junior majoring in computer science at BGSU Firelands.

Huron resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Pamela Sue Engle of Huron has received the John L. Clark Memorial Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Engle will receive $500 towards tuition for the 2014-2015 academic year.

This endowed award was made possible by donations from the family, friends, and co-workers of the late John Clark. Clark served as the Coordinator of Career Services at BGSU Firelands from 1985 until his untimely death in 2013.  He was especially sensitive to the unique challenges of non-traditional and veteran students. To be considered for this scholarship, students must be non-traditional and have a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

Engle is a 2003 graduate of Elyria High School.

She is a junior majoring in dietetics with a minor in health promotion at BGSU Firelands.

Monroeville resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Jared P. Thornton of Monroeville has received the Lary and Carlleen Scott Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Thornton will receive $1,506 towards tuition for the 2014-2015 academic year.

This scholarship was funded by the generosity of Lary and Carlleen Scott to honor Lary’s father, Wallace A. Scott, a highly respected educator who started his teaching career in Rushville, Ohio. While there, he coached the small town basketball team to a state championship. After leaving Rushville, he taught science and physical education at Elliot Junior High School in Cleveland. During the summer, he was the director of the Bedford city summer recreation program. In his spare time, he was a lifeguard and worked for the Cleveland Browns handling the yard line markers during the NFL season. Recipients of this award must have at least a 2.5 GPA. Financial need is a primary consideration and preference will be given to veterans.

Thornton is a 2014 graduate of Perkins High School where he graduated with an Honors Diploma and a Diploma of Distinction. He also earned an academic letter and particiapated in the Drama Club.

He is a freshman majoring in electronics and computer technologies at BGSU Firelands.

He is the son of Tracey and Angela Thornton.

Wakeman resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Collins resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Rebecca P. Missler of Collins has received the Margaret J. Linz Legacy Memorial Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Missler will receive $500 towards tuition for the 2014-2015 academic year.

This scholarship was established in memory of Margaret J. Linz by her family, in honor of the educational impact she had on the community. She enjoyed a long, fulfilling teaching career in Erie County and she was an active community volunteer. This award is available to a non-traditional junior or senior with a declared major in education, a minimum GPA of 3.0, and demonstrated financial need.

Missler is a 1990 graduate of Wellington High School where she was on the honor roll and involved in show choir.

She is a sophomore majoring in inclusive early childhood education education at BGSU Firelands.
