Local residents receive scholarships to attend BGSU Firelands

Norwalk resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands
Huron, Ohio – Cory Lynn Thiel of Norwalk has received the John F. & Doris E. Ernsthausen Memorial Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Thiel will receive $1,478 towards tuition for the 2013-2014 academic year.
These scholarships are awarded annually to graduating seniors of either Norwalk or St. Paul high schools. Academic achievement of a level promising success in college is the chief qualification.
Thiel is a 2013 graduate of Norwalk High School where she earned several honors and awards. She was on the honor roll and the Principal’s List, was the Outstanding Spanish Student, earned the Gold Tassel, the Good Citizenship Award, and the Outstanding Service Award. While in high school she was active in National Honor Society, varsity swimming, Foreign Language Club, Key Club, Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America, Teen Leadership Corps, Select Choir, musical productions, and she managed the boys soccer team.
She is a freshman majoring in nursing at BGSU Firelands.
She is the daughter of Jeffery and Sandy Thiel of Norwalk.

Norwalk resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands
Huron, Ohio – Janna Helena Schoemaker of Norwalk has received the John F. & Doris E. Ernsthausen Memorial Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Schoemaker will receive $1,478 towards tuition for the 2013-2014 academic year.
These scholarships are awarded annually to graduating seniors of either Norwalk or St. Paul high schools. Academic achievement of a level promising success in college is the chief qualification.
Schoemaker is a 2013 graduate of Norwalk High School where she received several awards including, the Good Citizenship Award, the Most Improved Bowler, Kiwani’s Student of the Month, and was named as a Northern Ohio League Scholar Athlete. While in high school she was active with majorettes, marching band, wind ensemble, orchestra, musical productions, bowling, golf, and Teen Leadership Corps.
She is a freshman majoring in business at BGSU Firelands.
She is the daughter of Frederick Schoemaker and Brenda Kelley.

Sandusky resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands
Huron, Ohio – Brianna Lynn Trent of Sandusky has received the Francine J. LaGrass Todd Memorial Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Trent will receive $1,000 towards tuition for the 2013-2014 academic year.
This scholarship was established in memory of Francine J. LaGrass Todd, a BGSU Firelands professor from 2004-2006. After a career in healthcare as a radiologic technologist as well as vice president/director of human resources at Fisher-Titus Medical Center in Norwalk, Todd returned to teaching, which she dearly loved. She was the interim program director for the radiologic technology program. This scholarship was initiated by her family, with the support of relatives and friends, in recognition of her professional prominence, her desire to give back to her community, and her dedication in the fields of radiologic technology and education.
Trent is a 2010 graduate of Perkins High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society, varsity track, varsity cheerleading, and varsity golf.
She is a junior majoring in diagnostic medical sonography at BGSU Firelands.
She is the daughter of Gary and Janice Trent of Sandusky.

Norwalk resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands
Huron, Ohio – Amber Lynn Harrod of Norwalk has received the Todd Marshall Memorial Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Harrod will receive $1,033 towards tuition for the 2013-2014 academic year.
Created by the family of Todd Marshall, who was a lecturer of biology at BGSU Firelands, and funded by his family and friends as well as community members, this scholarship supports a full-time student pursuing an associate or a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA and financial need is a consideration.
Harrod is a 2006 graduate of Western Reserve High School.
She is a senior majoring in nursing at BGSU Firelands where she has been on the Dean’s List.
She is the daughter of Steven and Beth Weisenberger of Norwalk.

Bellevue resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands
Huron, Ohio – Janelle Alexa Hess of Bellevue has received the James H. and Margaret B. McBride Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Hess will receive $1,000 towards tuition for the 2013-2014 academic year.
This scholarship was created by Margaret McBride. Although students from any discipline may receive the award, preference should be given to deserving students with musical interests.
Hess is a 2013 graduate of Bellevue High School where she earned varsity letters for academics, cheerleading, and band. She was consistantly on the honor roll and active with Key Club and Student Council.
She is a freshman majoring in nursing at BGSU Firelands.
She is the daughter of Greg and Jackie Hess of Bellevue.

New London resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands
Huron, Ohio – Monica Suzanne Henry of New London has received the John Clark Memorial Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Henry will receive $500 towards tuition for the 2013-2014 academic year.
This scholarship was made possible by donations from the family, friends, and co-workers of the late John Clark. Clark served as the coordinator of career services at BGSU Firelands from 1985 until his untimely death in 2013. He was especially sensitive to the unique challenges of non-traditional and veteran students. This scholarship is available to non-traditional students with a 2.5 GPA or higher.
Henry earned her GED in 1993. In her spare time she volunteers with the Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio.
She is a freshman majoring in respiratory therapy at BGSU Firelands.
She is the daughter of William and Ellen Powell of New London.

Huron resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands
Huron, Ohio – Nicki Jo Chavarria of Huron has received the Esperanza Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. Chavarria will receive funds towards tuition for the 2013-2014 academic year.
This scholarship is available to students of Latino descent who are enrolled in the bachelor of Social Work program at BGSU Firelands or the Bowling Green campus.
Chavarria is a 1996 graduate of Sandusky High School.
She is a junior majoring in social work at BGSU Firelands where she has been on the Dean’s List. While in school she has been active with the Humanitarian Organization for Peace through Education Club and she volunteers with Care and Share.
She is the daughter of Francisco and Dottie Chavarria.
