Huron, Ohio – “Ready or Not, Here They Come” is the appropriately titled workshop which is being held at BGSU Firelands on Saturday, March 23 for parents, teachers and community members in an effort to help them effectively prepare children for school and life success.

Dr. Kristie Pretti-Frontczak, professor of early childhood intervention in the School of Lifespan Development and Educational Sciences at Kent State University, is the featured speaker.  She will focus on how we, as a community, can ensure our youngest children are ready for school and developing the 21st century skills needed to be productive and successful citizens.

Pretti-Frontczak is the program director for Kent’s Early Childhood Intervention Specialist program and she is also the current past-president of the Division for Early Childhood.

Held in the BGSU Firelands Cedar Point Center, the March 23 event will feature a morning session from 9-10:30 which is free and open to the public.  Parents and community members are encouraged to attend.

“Parents are a child’s first teacher and need support in giving children a strong start in life,” said Kimberly Shibley, adjunct instructor at BGSU Firelands and the infant/toddler specialist of the Child Care Resource Center, Lorain.  “Community and business leaders need to partner with schools to ensure that children are gaining the valuable skills needed for the 21st century workforce,” said Shibley.

The second portion of the event is a conference which is designed for educators.  Those interested in the full-day workshop must register in advance and there is a $60 fee which includes breakfast and lunch.  Registration can be done through the web at http://conta.cc/XDZumP or by contacting LouAnn Rhodes at 440.960.7187.

According to Shibley, “As Ohio’s unveils the new Early Learning and Development Standards for Birth to Kindergarten Entry in 2013, educators in early childhood must be knowledgeable not only on what young children need to learn, but how to guide their learning in meaningful ways.”

The public portion of the event is presented through the BGSU Firelands Community Enrichment Series which is funded by private donors.  The educators conference is offered and sponsored through the Child Care Resource Center.
