Firelands Professor Featured on PBS Documentary

Huron, Ohio – Bowling Green State University Firelands College Adjunct Assistant Professor Larry L. Nelson will be featured in “War of 1812 in the Old Northwest,” a documentary film produced by WGTE TV, a Toledo-area PBS affiliate. The program will air at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20.
Nelson worked for nearly 25 years as the site-director of Fort Meigs State Memorial (a restored War of 1812 fortification and museum) in Perrysburg before his retirement from the Ohio Historical Society in 2004.
An authority in Ohio’s frontier history, Nelson has authored five books and numerous articles dealing with Ohio in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He has also appeared in other PBS and History Channel presentations including the Emmy nominated 2003 History Channel production “First Invasion: 1812.”
“American successes along the Western Basin of Lake Erie, including two important victories won within a few miles of the BGSU Firelands campus were important to the successful conclusion of the war,” claims Nelson.
“The August 1813 victory at Fort Stephenson at Lower Sandusky (present-day Fremont, Ohio) and Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s September 1813 victory at the Battle of Lake Erie blunted British ambitions within the area, helped consolidate American victories elsewhere in North America, and paved the way for the conclusion of the conflict the following year,” added Nelson
Nelson received a bachelor’s of science degree in education and a master’s degree in history from The Ohio State University and his doctorate degree in American history from Bowling Green State University. In addition to his duties at BGSU Firelands, he is also editor of Northwest Ohio History, a regional, refereed journal published by the Maumee Valley Historical Society and edited out of the History Department at BGSU.
