Huron, Ohio – Bowling Green State University Firelands College has recently formalized an agreement with Sandusky City Schools to offer college level classes to the general public at Sandusky High School beginning fall of 2011.

“Stakeholders in the community have expressed their desire to have more college courses offered inside the Sandusky City limits,” said BGSU Firelands Dean William Balzer.  “Sandusky has always strongly supported BGSU Firelands and we are pleased that we are able to expand our boundaries, offer this valuable educational opportunity, and enhance our relationship with the community.”

The agreement between the two educational institutions signifies a return to the past.  Prior to the opening of the BGSU Firelands campus in 1968, Bowling Green State University offered classes at Sandusky High School in what was then called the BGSU Academic Center.

The courses offered at Sandusky High School will include a variety of general education classes and will provide affordable and convenient college options for those who cannot travel to Huron.

“We are very excited about this opportunity,” said Sandusky City Schools Superintendent Tom Tucker.  “Student exposure to BGSU Firelands on a daily basis will provide a constant reminder of the importance of a college education.”

Tucker also believes the community will benefit from the opportunities available from the college experience at a local high school facility.

Offered in the evenings, the Sandusky High School courses are taught by the same caliber of experienced and engaging faculty as the Huron campus.  The courses are an excellent option for first-time students who want to begin their work toward a college degree, current students who would find these locally offered courses more accommodating given their work and personal schedules, or community members who wish to broaden their horizons through college coursework.

Fall semester begins August 22 and the courses offered during the initial session will include:
