Room rates to increase next semester

The BGSU Board of Trustees voted 9-0 in favor of the raise on Friday, which will cost students an extra $40 to $90 based on the room type.
“We’re doing our best to keep the rates as low as possible,” said trustee David Levey during the meeting.
An increase in operational and personnel costs contributed to the rate increase, said Chief Financial Officer Sheri Stoll.
When the cost of healthcare increases for employees or factors like that, the costs get passed down to fees such as room rates, she said.
While rates increase every year, Stoll said this has been the lowest increase compared to the past few years.
According to the Board of Trustees cabinet book, BGSU currently has the lowest room and board rates than any other four-year state college in Ohio at the cost of $7,694.
The University is also implementing the $95 technology fee and $50 laundry fee into the overall room rate.
This is to avoid confusion when people expect to see one cost, but find out there’s more later on, Stoll said.
Demand won’t drop for the newer and more expensive dorms even with an increase in rates, she said.
“If you look back at the paid housing deposits, Centennial Hall was the first to fill up,” Stoll said.
Falcon Heights should sell out again next year due to its high demand as will, she said.
The Board also approved a plan to renovate the Falcon’s Nest in the Union over the summer for a projected cost of $4 million.
They did not decide on what dining options would replace 2.Mato 2.Nite, Zona Mexicana and Wendy’s.
The University intends for renovations to be completed by fall semester 2012.
