The Board of Trustees voted in approval of renovations to McDonald and Kresicher Residence Halls during their latest meeting on Friday on the third floor of the Union.

The approval will allow for upgrades to Kreischer’s electrical needs such as lighting and doors, as well as installment of security cameras and upgrades to the internet within the building.

As part of the Residence Life and Dining Services Master Plan and the Bowling Green Campus Master Plan, Kreischer will receive over $2 million in renovations while McDonald would receive over $9 million.

The first two phases to renovating McDonald Hall have already been completed, allowing necessary groundwork for the latest series of improvements to be made.

Renovations McDonald will be receiving include improved restrooms and internet access, a renewed electrical system, better attention to elevator service, new lounge furniture and a redesigned entrance and courtyard.

The Board of Trustees also voted on a 6.94 percent increase in Residence Hall Room Rates for the fall semester of 2013, saying they wanted to keep room rates as low as possible.

Additionally, the Board granted approval to revisions of the Special Course Fee in order to fund courses providing outside academic classes  to enhance student learning in response to rising costs of courses like flight training for Aviation majors.

Kathy Mueller, President of Firelands Advising Board, gave a report as Firelands College Board Representative, during which she said Firelands will be offering a Bachelor of Sciences in Social Work starting this fall.

“As a social worker, I am very happy about this,” Mueller said about the announcement of the new degree program and the 257% increase in the number of students enrolled in health programs.

The Bachelor’s of Sciences in Social Work degree will be the ninth Bachelor’s Degree offered on Firelands campus alongside Bachelors of Science degrees such as Nursing, Criminal Justice and Early Childhood Education as well as Bachelors of Liberal Studies.

Other announcements made during the meeting include the change in name for Bachelor of Science in Technology with a major in Engineering Technology to a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology, and the approval of renovations to the Falcon’s Nest in the Union.
