PSA So Far

The experience with the PSA so far is good.  All group members seem to be in the project to get the work done and take and equal part.  Yesterday we got the foundation of the project done at my apartment and we also decided on how the remaining work is divided up so we can finish by Wednesday at the end of our lab time.  I feel good about were we are with the project and I am confident that we will all pull our own weight to complete the project and turn in quality work on time.

Computers Are Important For The Classroom

PART ONE: My Thoughts…

I think computers are important to have in schools because it allows students to research for specific information that is from different parts of the world, therefore, having different perspectives of the subject.  Computers also make it easy for students to communicate with professors and other students when it comes to the classwork and other class related activities (Blackboard and Email).  Different perspectives allow for a more well rounded understanding of the subject and, therefore, a well rounded student.

PART TWO: To A Blind Date…

I would first ask what he thought about computers in the classroom and go form there (age and if he attended college are factors)…

I think computers are important to have in schools because makes things easier for students in an already stressful environment.  It lets students to research for specific information that is from different parts of the world, therefore, having different perspectives of the subject.  Computers also make it easy for students to communicate with professors and other students when it comes to the classwork and other class related activities and questions (email).  Different perspectives allow for a more well rounded understanding of the subject, and a well rounded student.

PSA Criteria

A PSA should be…

Creative, relative, relatable, fact based, attention grabbing, powerful, easy to understand (get the message), inspire change, thought out, clear message, to the point, visually appealing, aimed at a specific audience, and appropriate for all ages.

PSA Ideas

Grandparents and cell phones or computers.

  1. Message: How technology literate are you?
  2. Audience: Senior Citizens
  3. Medium (video or audio): Video

Teens and doing research.

  1. Message: Use technology to your advantage.
  2. Audience: High Schoolers
  3. Medium (video or audio): Video

College students using Facebook too much?

  1. Message: Technology dumbing them down?
  2. Audience: College Students
  3. Medium (video or audio): Video

Think Before You Post Commercial

How do the actors portray the message?  What persuasive techniques are used in the video?  What role does the voiceover play?  How is text used in the screen?

The actors portray the message as typical teens would.  The boys in the commercial thought the girl that posted the picture was pretty and from there it seemed to spread like wildfire.  The girl who posted the picture acted as anyone would who found out that their picture was getting to people they didn’t want it to go to…fear.  The persuasive techniques uses in the video were that it was targeting the age group that is doing the act and it’s something that this age group can relate to because it is set in a high school.  The voiceover plays the role of the ‘authority’ on the situation.  It could be seen as an adult or teacher speaking to the teens.  The text is used to ‘bring the message home’ because it catches your attention with the white background with red text.

Literacy Statistics

The statistics I read were shocking!  I did not realize that things were so bad.  This really makes me question our education system because with such overwhelming numbers there has to be something in the system and not an isolated incident.  From there we get the statistic of one billion illiterate people and from that one billion people two thirds of them are women.  While there are multiple causes for this it’s still shocking that our education system has such an impact of those numbers.  We need to find something different because what we are doing is not working.

Guest Speaker Question

Have you personally done any PSAs?  Which ones have you done?

Technology

Spend the first few minutes of class thinking about how technology is used in everyday life for the general public.  Move beyond the role it plays in your life specifically and also think about how you see others using it. Think about what role does technology plays, what benefits it offer, what threats, and what role it has on literacy.  Blog your reflection.

Technology is everywhere!  The three things I see used most in class and on campus in general are lap tops, iPods, and cell phones.  The role these things play are communicating with others and entertainment.  Lap tops help communicate with others as well as taking notes and doing research.  Cell phones are also for communication whether it’s texting or a phone call.  I find that iPods are for pure entertainment.  I know I use mine to keep me busy while walking to class and other similar activities.

Peer Workshop

Reflect on your past experiences with peer workshops or peer review.  Spend some time talking about classes in the past that you have used it in, what you have liked about it, what you have disliked about it, and more.  Share your overall thoughts and make sure to justify your thoughts with specific detail.

The last classes I took that used peer workshop were my ENG 111 and ENG 112 classes.  We used peer workshop much like we do in this class.  We would take a day to read each other’s drafts and make comments, suggestions, and corrections using a worksheet.  After we were done with this we would talk to the person who’s draft we were reading and share what we had written on the worksheet under the prompts given.

These days really did help me because when I tend to look over simple mistakes when I write because I keep looking at the same thing over and over, and I know what I wanted it to say so my mind skips over some silly things.  What I dislike about peer workshop is that you sometimes get paired with a partner that doesn’t give you viable feedback.  It doesn’t help me when my partner tells me that everything looked good and there is nothing to correct…there is always something that could be done better.  It gets reflected in my grade when this happens.

Monster Blog

I’m not a good drawer, but in theory I drew a vampire.  She is standing and wearing a normal outfit of jeans and a long-sleeved orange shirt.  She has red eyes and fangs that are tainted red also.  She has long black hair.
