Arts Xpose Assignment NUMBER TWO: Black Swamp Arts Festival

BLACK SWAMP ARTS FESTIVAL
 September 5-7, 2008

 Downtown Bowling Green, OH

TYPE OF EVENT?: ARTS EXHIBITION

1.)  Provide a brief detail-oriented technical description or summary of the event you attended.  This section should remain journalistic and should not be reflective of your opinion.

It seemed as if people had come from all over the place for a spot on the Bowling Green Main Street. I have never been to this festival before, and really only live about 20 mins away from here. This festival amazed me by the shear fact that it is solely arts. And this doesn’t give it justice just how wide of a selection that was there. Glass, painting, weaving, singing… you name it, it was probably there.

2.)  Use the section below to write a well-structured paragraph focusing on your personal critical insight / response to the event.  How did you interpret or react to what was presented to you?

I’m not incredibly into crowds, but BSAF was quite manageable. Things were not too crowded and irritating and you were able to see artwork and not have to fight about getting anywhere near it. I will enjoy going back next year and hopefully for years to come. I loved the variety of artists and how you could be looking at beautiful jewlery one second, and a weaving project the next. It always kept you guessing what you would see next, which is always good. Nobody likes a stale art show. =]

3.)  What information, ideas, images, etc. most impressed you and why?

Well we did end up finding a woman who does all of her art in puffy paint. That was amazing to me. I absolutely love puffy paint and can do magnificent things with puffy paint. And for me to see someone who was actually sitting down to create a beautiful picture with puffy paint was awe-inspiring.

4.)  Overall, how would you rate this event (10 being the most worthwhile)?
            10

5.)  Justify your rating in the question above:

I love art, I love meeting people, and I love seeing people’s personalities displayed in their projects.

Recitals

1.)  Provide a brief detail-oriented technical description or summary of the event you attended.  This section should remain journalistic and should not be reflective of your opinion.

The concert started out with two girls there to lead the whole night. The one is a foreign exchange student and the other, her roommate. These two led the whole night and introduced speaker after speaker and musician after musician. The first slideshow was very heartwrenching and shown pictures of the victims and families effected by the earthquake. There were quite a few varieties of musicians that followed, and you even recieved a lecture about what an earthquake is. All in all, it was an outreach concert to raise awareness of the dangers and plight that can be caused by nature.

2.)  Use the section below to write a well-structured paragraph focusing on your personal critical insight / response to the event.  How did you interpret or react to what was presented to you?

First off, I would just like to say that some people need to be able to manage their children more carefully at public events. Numerous times I would be distracted because the man behind us had proceeded to let this child run rampant and sing loudly to the beautiful music. There were so many pieces of music and each touched you differently. Some told stories while others made you want to cry. It was amazing.

3.)  What information, ideas, images, etc. most impressed you and why?

I know what didn’t impress me at all that night. The fact that we recieved about a 20 min. or longer lecture on what an earthquake is, and why it is dangerous to an area. I felt as if i should have gone to geology class or something and not a concert. The man stood in front of us all between muscians, and droned on and on. Prior to his droning i was completely into the whole concert. And by the time the man was speaking. I was done with being there. The only good move about that man was the fact that he was placed between musicans, so people couldnt walk out.

4.)  Overall, how would you rate this event (10 being the most worthwhile)?
          8

5.)  Justify your rating in the question above:

The good, the bad, and the beautiful. I loved the concert, hated the lecture. =]
