ARTS XPOSE NUMBER FOUR

ART MUSEUM TRIP

November 7, 2008

Toledo Museum of Art

TYPE – ART MUSEUM

1.)  Provide a brief detail-oriented technical description or summary of the event you attended.  This section should remain journalistic and should not be reflective of your opinion.

The Toledo Museum of Art is a museum that everyone and anyone can go to. It was built and created to be a place for everyone, not just the rich and prestige. This museum holds various pieces of art from varies parts in time. It has a large section for modern art and a wonderful selection for classical pieces of art.

2.)  Use the section below to write a well-structured paragraph focusing on your personal critical insight / response to the event.  How did you interpret or react to what was presented to you?

While at the art museum my tour group was taken back into the back of the museum into a room that led to the Peristyle Theatre hall. This hall will take your breath away and you will feel almostt as if you have walked into some place holy. The theatre is dedicated to Mrs. Libby, one of the founders of the art museum, and holds parts of roman art and architecture, greek, and architecture from the colloseum. This place has been used for years and still has its original seats. Each of which have been taken care of with love and compassion. The theatre has held concerts, graduations, parties and anything else you can imagine as a way to branch the community together in different aspects of the world.

3.)  What information, ideas, images, etc. most impressed you and why?

I enjoy going to the art museum and watching the demenstrations that are always held in the glass building across the street. The frist time I ever went I saw a man create a large glass fish before my eyes, complete with color and textures and this last time that we went we saw another man create two sea horses. He then took those sea horses and created the bottom of a wine glass. It was just so incredibly inspiring to see the process and dedication that it takes an artist to creat something so beautiful and detailed that makes me want to attempt it myself.

4.)  Overall, how would you rate this event (10 being the most worthwhile)?
            (7)

5.)  Justify your rating in the question above:

The art tour guide we had had a very great attitude and really knew what she was talking about. It was just she spent too much time on one certain subject and didnt get through as much as I would have liked to have gotten through. I’m someone who enjoys seeing a lot and getting information quickly, but she was a tad rather too slow. However, how can you argue with having a tour guide who dances when she speaks. Oh Pualetta! :]

ARTS XPOSE NUMBER THREE: Arts Xtravaganza

ART XTRAVAGANZA

December 5, 2008  6pm-9pm

BGSU ARTS BUILDING

Please choose the type of event from below and include in your blog post

(Only the events listed below fulfill the artsXpose requirement):

  Arts Related Conferences

1.)  Provide a brief detail-oriented technical description or summary of the event you attended.  This section should remain journalistic and should not be reflective of your opinion.

Arts Xtravaganza is an event where all of the different variations of art classes and groups get around and create a giant art “fair”. This is where they can gather support for their group, earn money by selling projects made through the year, and show the community just what has been going on so far. This event is rather large and uses the entire arts building first floor and second, to spread the word of art around entirely.

2.)  Use the section below to write a well-structured paragraph focusing on your personal critical insight / response to the event.  How did you interpret or react to what was presented to you?

In so many parts of the world art and music has been taken out of classrooms and so many people do not appreciate what it is that artists do. Without art the world would be naked and drab and things would not be nearly how they are today. Without art and music in classrooms there would not be the education passed on from generation to generation. Music would no longer plague the ears of so many and so many visual things we have come to love will disapear. To lose out on a generation and generations to come would be a terrible waste.

3.)  What information, ideas, images, etc. most impressed you and why?

I loved how you were able to walk around every corner of the building and find something new. I loved how there were demonstrations in some of the areas of the building and that there was live theatre in a lot of the rooms. I’m glad that something like this is able to be organized and open to the public. It actually made me want to try glass blowing and try to do metal working. While yes, in high school we did a lot of metal work, I wouldn’t mind going and trying to learn some new techniques to be better.

4.)  Overall, how would you rate this event (10 being the most worthwhile)?
            (10 ) =]

5.)  Justify your rating in the question above:

This art event was amazing! I absolutely loved the fact that you were able to see all and everything that everyone else has been working on in their classes. The teeshirt printing area was really interesting and looked rather fun to do. I will definitely remember to bring cash money next year and buy quite a few of the glass blown christmas ornaments.

BLOG ENTRY NUMBER FOUR: Great Works of Color

history of art: Claude Monet Impression: soleil levant 1875

This painting ‘s title supposedly gave impressionism it’s name. In this picture color is used to show the water and sky in a beautifully done painting of the harbor outside of Monet’s room. In this image Monet uses a lot more brilliant colors than he does in his numerous paintings of water lilies. Here in this painting you are given bright yellows that stand amongst brilliant blues and are beautifully connected with soft greens. These colors work well with one another and make you feel as if it were you out in that boat staring at the midsun. Although the reference is small the human forms seen in the boat seem human in a way. While one is standing, it is apparent that one is sitting fishing. While looking at this artwork I have a strong wish to paint water. Just looking at how many colors he used to show the waves of the ocean inspires me to want to do the same and explored the different ways that color can be used to express movement.

visual culture: [Based in Paris, Zevs the anonymous Parisian street artist has been active since the early 90s].

zev4.jpg

Yellow, that stereotypical happy-go-lucky color. The color of sunshine, the color of sunflowers, the color of fast food? For years this anoymous street artist named Zevs has been running around Paris adding his point of views to billboards and advertisements. Whether it be adding a bleeding gunshot wound to a model’s airbrushed face, or by giving the Mac Apple logo a bleeding and smearing appearance. Above is a pieve he did in front of a McDonald’s resturant. Make of it what you will. To me, it appears that the logo is slowly melting off and going away, or… perhaps the logo is vomiting from its over commercialized business. How does it make you feel? Just like with other people’s street art, i feel influenced to want to go out and create some pieces of my own. I think street art is amazing and so creative and I only wish i were able to get the nerve to out and and create some of my own.

fashion: Emma Hack 3D ‘human wallpaper’

Image...

Artist Hack spends 19 or so hours trying to paint a design she has created onto the naked body of a woman. She begins by designing a background that she finds pleasing. With the selection of colors above I feel that they compliment the skin of the women above nicely and gives her a nice healthy tan appearance. While yes, fashion can be made with cloth and other materials, I was far more intrigued by the painting aspect of it. To think that this model laid still for more than 19 hours just for a photoshoot shows devotion. But just looking at the beauty of the images painted onto her shows that it wasn’t in vain. I love the way that the colors play off of eachother and I am glad that the artist chose against using black to outline her pictures. The use of the maroony, deep purple causes a beautiful contrast to the whites and blues of the background.

BLOG ENTRY NUMBER THREE:

Do we define a place or does a place define us?

Places do not define who we are, although we can become inspired by where those places are and can take pieces of the place to create our artwork.

How is each of the featured artists influenced by particular places? How is this influence reflected in the artist’s work?

Richard is influenced by shipwork and other forms of transportation.

Sally is influenced by her parents and her children.

McGee and Killgallen are influenced by things that people have handpainted and are influenced by things that are found around on the streets.

Osirio is influenced by his family history and background and his first haircut.

Cara Walker is influenced by slavery and the deep south.

Kiki Smith is influenced by the trials and burnings of witches.

Which artist do you feel most connected to and why?

The artists that i felt most connected to would have to be McGee and Killgallen. I love seeing signs that people have painted themselves and enjoy the different ways that things can be written and styled. I also love to be able to read someone from their artwork it does help you “learn about someone without even knowing them.”

When you were young, was there a place that interested you? A place that scared you? List five places from your childhood. Use one word to describe each of them.

When I was younger, I used to live in town and there were very few places in my house where I could hide and leave to do whatever I wish to do. But while living in the town house I was able to find a few places.

1. A place that scared me would have to have been our basement and the door leading down to it. The basement had bricks missing from its walls and was covered in spider webs, basically it was the last place any little kid would ever want to be. {UNTOUCHED}

2. I used to hide under things a lot, and was often foudn hiding underneath our large dining room table doodling in a sketchbook with crayons or just reading a book to pass the time. Under the table i felt as if i were in a forrest and could imagine different stories in my head. {ADVENTURE}

3. While in the townhouse my closet was about half the size of the closet I have now at my parents home but about the same size as the closet in my dorm room. While in there, I used to take flashlights and pillows and blankets and create a home away from home where no one else could go. In there I could dream and imagine all that i wish without having to worry if my little brother would be coming in to break it down. {SAFETY}

4. Grandma’s house was a house where my cousins and I were able to run from room to room doing whatever we wish to do. I grew up with three older boy cousins and was the only girl for about eight years of my life. There we could be as stupid as we wanted without having to worry about getting yelled at for doing something wrong. {FREEDOM}

5. My swingset at my townhouse. A good blanket, some headphones… and a book… [i was a multitasker] and i was set for life. {RELAXATION}

Pick one of those places. Try and remember it as well as you can. Answer these questions about it… What objects occupy that place? What are the textures and sizes of those objects? What was the lighting like? Was it a dark dreary place? Or a bright happy one?

My swing was made of wood with a rusty old chain on either side of the seat to hold it up on the wooden stand. Around me a lot of the time were branches that my dad had wanted me to pick up or leaves that had fallen because of the change in the seasons. Despite the swing being made of wood i always found it just as comfortable and it helped that i had always broughten blankets out to make myself warmer and comfier. On the swing i was usually always happy, or was able to make myself happy.

IMAGE ESSAY NUMBER TEN: Value contrast

Value is the way that you use shading and other techniques in order to create a way to accent an artwork. In this image value contrast is shown from the high dark parts of the image to the very white parts. This creates a contrast and can help define an image and break of sections that the artist is trying to show. When looking at the woman on the left you can tell that the light source on her face is quite high as compared the the man on her left. This vast white space breaks up the darkness in the image and can help give the characters life. When looking at the woman on the lefts hair you can see depth and definition when a black line is placed next to a white line. Using contrast is very effective when you are trying to give expression to your artwork as shown in this image.

IMAGE ESSAY NUMBER EIGHT: Shading

Wow. When given enough motivation and time art can be allowed to grow into something amazing and breathtaking. In this image, shading is presented in a wonderful fashion. When you shade correctly you can help pop out parts of what you’re trying to capture and can add definition to your subject matter. As you can see, the veins of the arm in front of you stand out almost as if you can feel them if you were to reach out to them. With shading also comes contrast and this image is a prime example of both techniques working hand in hand to create an astonishing piece of artwork. Shading can make an image feel more realistic and lifelike and can help capture something more acurately than if the image were nothing but a flat looking attempt. This artwork is a wonderful example of shading that captures the point of view of the artist and can make you feel almost as if you are staring that close at someone’s leg and arm.

IMAGE ESSAY NUMBER NINE: Radial Symmetry

Radial Symmetry is when an image uses a technique to either draw the audience/viewer to the center of the image, or causes the viewer to allow their eye to travel aroundthe image in a circular fashion. This technique words great in this image. While at first your eyes are drawn to the middle of the window, you cannot help but want to look around the image in a circular fashion to see all that the image offers. Radial symmetry is a wonderful technique that works great to move the eye around, without having too much trouble to do so. In this window, the glass and colors jump out at you in brilliant ways. While the center is a brilliant blue color the further out that you go the more spread out and brighter the colors grow. When the individual sections of the window grow in size, it also helps create a simple way to move the eye around the art piece.

IMAGE ESSAY NUMBER SEVEN: Scale

When you place something familar to oneself in front of something else it creates a contrast that can be called scale. Scale allows the audience to relate to the picture before them. In this image a woman who is placed in front of this wooden sculpture shows the audience how large the sculpture really is. When placed into scale, the womans hand is about as size as a single finger nail on the sculpture. How amazing it is to be able to see how large this sculpture is. But not only is it’s size impressive but so is the detail of the creature. You are able to see the bone structure of the sculpture and get a great feel for another vocabulary word, texture. When used together the vocabulary words we have learned, are able to correctly create an amazing piece of artwork, whether it be painted, created, or sculpted.

Arts Xpose Assignment NUMBER TWO: Black Swamp Arts Festival

BLACK SWAMP ARTS FESTIVAL
 September 5-7, 2008

 Downtown Bowling Green, OH

TYPE OF EVENT?: ARTS EXHIBITION

1.)  Provide a brief detail-oriented technical description or summary of the event you attended.  This section should remain journalistic and should not be reflective of your opinion.

It seemed as if people had come from all over the place for a spot on the Bowling Green Main Street. I have never been to this festival before, and really only live about 20 mins away from here. This festival amazed me by the shear fact that it is solely arts. And this doesn’t give it justice just how wide of a selection that was there. Glass, painting, weaving, singing… you name it, it was probably there.

2.)  Use the section below to write a well-structured paragraph focusing on your personal critical insight / response to the event.  How did you interpret or react to what was presented to you?

I’m not incredibly into crowds, but BSAF was quite manageable. Things were not too crowded and irritating and you were able to see artwork and not have to fight about getting anywhere near it. I will enjoy going back next year and hopefully for years to come. I loved the variety of artists and how you could be looking at beautiful jewlery one second, and a weaving project the next. It always kept you guessing what you would see next, which is always good. Nobody likes a stale art show. =]

3.)  What information, ideas, images, etc. most impressed you and why?

Well we did end up finding a woman who does all of her art in puffy paint. That was amazing to me. I absolutely love puffy paint and can do magnificent things with puffy paint. And for me to see someone who was actually sitting down to create a beautiful picture with puffy paint was awe-inspiring.

4.)  Overall, how would you rate this event (10 being the most worthwhile)?
            10

5.)  Justify your rating in the question above:

I love art, I love meeting people, and I love seeing people’s personalities displayed in their projects.

Arts Xpose Assignment NUMBER ONE: China Earthquake Fundraiser Concert

China Earthquake Fundraiser Concert

September 26. 2008

BGSU, Kobacker Hall

Please choose the type of event from below and include in your blog post

Recitals

1.)  Provide a brief detail-oriented technical description or summary of the event you attended.  This section should remain journalistic and should not be reflective of your opinion.

The concert started out with two girls there to lead the whole night. The one is a foreign exchange student and the other, her roommate. These two led the whole night and introduced speaker after speaker and musician after musician. The first slideshow was very heartwrenching and shown pictures of the victims and families effected by the earthquake. There were quite a few varieties of musicians that followed, and you even recieved a lecture about what an earthquake is. All in all, it was an outreach concert to raise awareness of the dangers and plight that can be caused by nature.

2.)  Use the section below to write a well-structured paragraph focusing on your personal critical insight / response to the event.  How did you interpret or react to what was presented to you?

First off, I would just like to say that some people need to be able to manage their children more carefully at public events. Numerous times I would be distracted because the man behind us had proceeded to let this child run rampant and sing loudly to the beautiful music. There were so many pieces of music and each touched you differently. Some told stories while others made you want to cry. It was amazing.

3.)  What information, ideas, images, etc. most impressed you and why?

I know what didn’t impress me at all that night. The fact that we recieved about a 20 min. or longer lecture on what an earthquake is, and why it is dangerous to an area. I felt as if i should have gone to geology class or something and not a concert. The man stood in front of us all between muscians, and droned on and on. Prior to his droning i was completely into the whole concert. And by the time the man was speaking. I was done with being there. The only good move about that man was the fact that he was placed between musicans, so people couldnt walk out.

4.)  Overall, how would you rate this event (10 being the most worthwhile)?
          8

5.)  Justify your rating in the question above:

The good, the bad, and the beautiful. I loved the concert, hated the lecture. =]
