The world that we all live in today is full of sexualized advertisements, some more obvious than others. In this case, it may be very obvious. From a commercial, to a printed add, this particular Carl’s Jr. advertisement was published back in 2005 and broke the internet with much controversy. The popular fast food chain, Carl’s Jr., is known for their many advertisements selling burgers with “hot” celebrities in bikinis. This particular advertisement reflects on gender by having an a women on the front with minimal clothing, showing a lot of skin. This woman also happens to be a well known celebrity, Paris Hilton. Her stance comes off as sexual. With her eyes closed, blonde hair blowing in the wind, back bent, and arm bent with her hand on her hip, it makes her look vulnerable. Pertaining to race, you see that more of these ads have white women in them. Along with many others, this implies that white women are more attractive and will grab the attention of other more likely. Also, white women are primarily used in these types of advertisements that portray women as objects and to just sell a product. This advertisement is also extremely over sexualized. This ad is suppose to be selling a cheeseburger, but instead it seems to be selling the female in the photo. Even though the cheeseburger is larger than the image of the female, your eyes still gravitate toward the female. “She’ll tell you size doesn’t matter. She’s lying.” is the slogan that was used for this add. Obviously this slogan is over sexualized and makes you think of male genitalia first and not the burger. Having a female in a bikini eating a burger is extremely unnecessary and very unnatural. This advertisement is selling a woman and her body and not so much the burger. The main goal of this ad was to sell a burger for a franchise, Carl’s Jr., except it seems to be selling quite the opposite.
