Jon Stewart – Hotspots

An absolutely ridiculous idea. The idea of making homeless people stand around so everyone with smart phones and tablets can use there expensive devices to get something as unnecessary as 4G networking. I understand trying to help a homeless person make some money, but why not make it more than $20.

Kony

I find this Kony business ridiculous. I looked further into the video, and there is much more to it than one youtube video. People do not understand how long this has been happening, the fact that it has practically been under control for years, and that the company that made the video only gives about 30% of donations to the profit of stopping Kony. People find one cute youtube video and believe it instantly and make it viral. If our generation believes everything on youtube, I’m seriously worried. Don’t get me wrong, the video is for a good cause, but the amount of support people are giving that particular organization is not the best way to stop the cause at hand.

Group Minds

This article seems to be clear and straight to the point. It doesn’t seem to be proving or arguing much, rather than simply stating an opinion on societies conforming capabilities and trends. I can see how it relate to “Opinions and Social Pressure” article, only that article attempts to prove the opinion of this one.

Opinions and Social Pressure

I found this experiment to be effective in some ways but ineffective in others. In the type of setting that it was, with college students in a classroom style environment, it was a well executed experiment. The results seemed to be appropriate for this type of test also. But it would appear that this was not a very drastic experiment and the same results may not apply to a setting in which conforming to a majority is a much more serious affect, with greater consequences than embarrassment. So, overall it was a good experiment on a smaller scale, but in more serious situations such as a big test or even a life threatening situation, the results may not be so clear.

Obedience to Authority

I found this experiment to be quite a drastic description of how to obtain obedience. I felt as though there was a lot of pressure and fear that may have been an interference in the experiment in which could have caused false results. I didn’t exactly see how this related to the other articles specifically, nor how it forms a pattern of obedience like the modern society would think of it, but overall I think the tests had some good effects and some negatives.

The Power of Situations

I found this article quite interesting. I thought it conveyed all the main possibilities of Johns situation accurately considering the little information given in the example. I agree with the thought process the article used in that it mentioned what the person in the doorway looked like and what his purpose may be. Short but effective overall.

Obedience to Authority

I found this article to be quite extreme. It seemed to only discuss obedience on levels that are of high authority and really none of a lower, less significant manner. I also think that adding religious stories such as Adam and Eve or the Greek Myths can be somewhat misleading because they can be interpreted in many different ways.

Overall, I think it was strong but needed some less extreme examples and also the removal of a few unnecessary paragraphs such as paragraph 5 on spiritual development.

Regina George

“How do I begin to describe Regina George?” (Janis). This is the perfect question to ask about who Regina George is as a person. Many rumors float around the school, every one explaining how perfect Regina George is. She is described as “flawless” (Emma Gerber) and complimented in an abundance of ways. It is even said that “her hair is insured for $10,000” (Tim Pak). It is explained by Short Girl that she “met John Stamos on a plane” and Regina’s beauty is further reiterated by Jessica Lopez who claims the he “told her she was pretty” (Lopez).

There is however one flaw to the argument that may describe Regina a being somewhat of a bitch. “One time she punched me in the face” (Bethany Byrd) explains, only to conclude that the punch was “awesome” (Byrd).

Adolescent Sleep, School Start Times, and Teen Motor Vehicle Crashes

The article presents is facts very well, relating its abundance of statistics directly to its main purpose; more sleep = less car accidents. It is relatable to its audience of teens because it is obvious that all teens would love an hours extra sleep in the morning. The article used a lot of evidence throughout, but did not think at all of the difference between the attitudes of different students in the morning. Aside from that, the article presented its facts well, with useful data and visuals, to present its facts of later school start times being an effective way to reduce car accidents among teens.

SOPA

If SOPA had passed people would go ballistic first and foremost. It may sound ridiculous, but I truly believe that people would rampage with the lack of Facebook, youtube, twitter and even simply using wikipedias information. Society today has gotten so comfortable with being able to simply get online and download a song or post one on Facebook, that with such a drastic change, people would become very ….well, angry. I know I would be mad, it is a stupid idea to limit the internets possibilities. If it is truly hurting someone, let it be known, but until then, we cannot be limited.

Haywire

It appears that in this movie that all the men underestimate the skill and power of the main character, a woman. This movie seems to want to show that woman have the capabilities to beat the sh*t out of men. The main difference between having a female action hero and a male action hero is how they are initially viewed. People in the film seem to know she is a threat, but don’t take it seriously until she proves it. This is the medias way of easily making her seem bad-ass (not that I’m saying she isn’t). It appears this way because the men become caught off guard enough for her to get a bunch of cool looking UFC moves in and take out the henchmen. Hopefully more is shown in the actual movie in which she has to struggle in a fight or lose one instead of always predictably attacking the male characters off guard.

Essay 1 Criterion

  • Clarify Audience: Making the audience apparent in an article is very important so the reader knows whether they are in the audience or not
  • Notify Audience: The reader must effectively and clearly explain what the problem is. It must be understandable for the reader to have a clear perspective of what the issue is about.
  • Statistics: An effective essay must have some sort of evidence such as numbers or stats in order to convince the audience in what they are trying to say.
  • Examples: Using real world and relatable examples is an efficient way to relate the article to the audience.
  • Solution: Providing a solution the the given problem is important because simply providing the reader with a problem but no way to fix it is not an effective way to catch interest.

Archer

Two criterion that a spy must have are the ability to think quickly and knowledge of a wide array of technologies. Archer seems to be quite a lousy spy. He is always a little behind when it comes to the mission, with some sort of distraction at hand. Archer also seems to lack knowledge in technology, always figuring out how something works as he is attempting to use it. He is definitely not your average spy, yet somehow always gets the job done.

TED: Sleep

Jessa Gamble’s main focus is humans and the natural clock in our body that tells us when to rest and when to wake. She compares the body clocks to different people all over the world who deal with different time lapses of light. She also explains how the modern day body clock is messed up from things such as work and jet lag, in a sense that the light no longer seems to tell us when to sleep, for we have greater priorities. She does not explain the importance of sleep unlike the other articles, she simply explains how our body clocks work naturally.

America’s Sleep Deprived Teens

To begin, the audience of this article is clearly adolescents, but also includes parents, who remain somewhat responsible for the teens living and sleeping in there household. In comparison to the previous sleep essay, I found that this one provided many statistics and solid numbers to provide their convincing data. This made the article and its facts much more believable as well as allowed myself as the reader to think about where I might stand in the statistics, for I do not believe I get enough sleep. The article did well in giving many different reasons on teens lack of sleep and also repeated time and time again that they do not get enough. The article also provided a very good summary in providing a solution to the problem of lack of sleep and I found this very efficient in making the article compatible with the readers.

Overall, I found the article well written and presented with a substantial amount of evidence to convince the reader of the point. Much more so than “A Third of Life”.

A Third Of Life – Paul Martin

I found the essay on sleep quite interesting considering I am an avid and regular sleeper myself. This should obviously be applicable to every human out there, the species being the audience, as everyone partakes in the activity. It interested me that sleep had been compared to eating or socializing as it is a behavior that is non-interactive. Along side that, the fact that it consumes about one-third of our lifetime is ironic as it consumes so much of our time, yet we still do not manage to get enough of it. It made me wonder how much time of our life would it consume if we actually did get the correct amount of sleep for our entire life? Also, the quote by James Gleick about the mere presence of an alarm clock implying sleep deprevation was something that I could relate to. I always manage to wake up a few minutes before my alarm goes off only to find I could have ten more minutes of sleep!!
Overall, I found the article quite interesting and applicable to my life, at least on the human related sections. Oh, and I enjoy the fact that there is a fish called, “slippery dick”. (I’m sure they could have used another fish, but they chose not to.)

O’Malley

O’Malley discusses the debate over testing. That includes whether or not large tests that cover a lot of information are better, or whether smaller tests on a more common basis would be more effective. She believes that smaller tests would mean less build up to a larger one and reduce stress and study time. I believe differently. I think a larger test shows more knowledge and memory of the information and a better overall understanding of the material.

Goldwasser

Amy Goldwasser discusses the issue of technology in upcoming generations and how kids no longer read, write or care about anything other than their iPods. She talks about how the older generation is afraid of what the young ones may do with the world with technology in their hands. But she ends up concluding how the internet can help us be more in touch with the world, our history and writing and reading online.

I agree with Goldwasser about the younger generation being helped by technology and how it can apply more knowledge than less.

Estrada – Sport names

Estrada discusses the issue of Native Americans being associated with mascots of sports teams. He tell how several high school and even Stanford college has changed their mascots due to the issue. Estrada strongly opposes separating the Native Americans in to competing ethnic groups.

I can see Estrada’s point of view on the matter, but I do not believe it is too offensive to the Native Americans. It can be seen in a supportive manner. Why would a team have a Native American as their mascot if it were a bad thing?
