The 3rd chapter of this book deals with the method in which one would use to research when studying secondlife. The author conducted his research of secondlife only through secondlife through his avatar Tom Bukowski. He says that a virtual world is a culture of its own and are legitimate when studying them as an actual culture. People use secondlife as a real means of social interaction and because of this secondlife exists as a culture. People integrate actual world aspects into these virtual worlds because they are newer in our culture and we don’t really know much different. This enables people to incorporate current events, political campaigns and anything else current in our society into these virtual worlds. In order to study further within secondlife, the author conducted interviews with other secondlife members, he studied the landscape of secondlife such as scenery, he shopped for clothes, build a house and learned games only playing in secondlife.
After reading this chapter I found many interesting things. I thought how in depth he went in researching secondlife was fascinating. He learned every aspect of the site and really showed through his research methods all he learned. No one in a virtual world is a true native of that world, obviously. So when doing research it was interesting to see response people had since some people he interviewed were members of secondlife for different periods of time, and “no one was born there.” I think he did a good job in terms of that since no one he interviewed was a true native of the site.
