Thanks to Barb Toth and David McClure for providing tips and helpful hints on graduate writing. The workshop was full of discussion and questions from both the presenters and the attendees.
Here is a summary of what was discussed:
- When writing, remember PAPA: purpose, audience, persona, and argument.
- Think about the “journalistic formula” when writing an abstract: who, what, when, where, and why.
- When writing a literature review, Barb reminded us that they have two purposes: to inform the reader, and, to form an argument for the reader that what you are proposing is relevant/filling a gap in the literature.
- Barb also reminded us that often, “less is more,” and “simple rather than complex” writing can work!
Overall, Barb and David provided some good points for discussion and some helpful tips and reminders for graduate writing.
