Study tips (Review Chasteen/other authors, as well as all notes, handouts and quizzes from class):
A. Do you know the basic geography and accomplishments of the pre-colombian groups (where did the Aztecs and Mayans live? What/where were their major sites/cities? What are they known for?)
B. Do you know the basic story of the conquest? (When/where did the explorers/conquerors arrive? Who was involved and why? What were the factors contributing to the friendly and/or violent relationship between Spanish and indigenous?)
C. Do you understand the concept of hegemony as it applies to the colonial period? Do you understand why Chasteen would use Sor Juana as an example of hegemony and patriarchy?
D. Do you understand the basic economic structures and priorities of the colonial period? Do you understand how ideas about race/ethnicity influenced the way people were judged within the socioeconomic, cultural and political hierarchy?
E. Do you understand the concepts of mestizaje and transculturation as Chasteen associates them with the colonial period, a period of extreme diversity but also of intermingling between those of different races, cultures and socioeconomic classes?
F. Do you know the basic timeline and motivations for the independence movements? Can you explain the basic results of independence for different groups in the Americas?
