NFL KICKS OFF NEW “SPORTS JOURNALISM & COMMUNICATIONS BOOT CAMP” MAY 13 AT BOWLING GREEN STATE UNIVERSITY

Four-day program for current & former players includes “final exam” covering Toledo Mud Hens baseball game

Twenty current and former NFL players took part in the first-ever NFL Sports Journalism & Communications Boot Camp from May 13-16 at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. With the new longer offseason, the boot camp is one of a record 10 training programs for post-NFL careers that NFL Player Engagement offers to current and former players.

The four-day program focused on improving each player’s writing skills for newspapers, radio, and the expanding digital media industry. A field exercise at a Toledo Mud Hens home game included a mock press conference as part of the player’s game coverage. Players wrote and recorded their own radio commentary as part of one of the other planned exercises.

Several of the outside faculty from the NFL’s popular Broadcast Boot Camp were also be involved as well as former NFL players-turned-journalists MATT BOWEN (Chicago Tribune), MATT CHATHAM (Boston Herald), and BUCKY BROOKS (NFL.com and NFL Network).

The boot camp was hosted by the BGSU School of Media and Communications and the Sport Management program and was developed with NFL Player Engagement, under the auspices of the Richard A. Maxwell Sport Media Project. BGSU Faculty participants included from the Department of Journalism and Public Relations: Drs. Jim Foust, Kathy Bradshaw, Catherine Cassara, Terry Rentner and Lecturer Kelly Taylor; from the Department of Telecommunications: Lori Liggett, lecturer and Stephen Merrill, instructor; from the Department of Communication: Dr. Michael Butterworth; and from the Department of Sports Management: Dr. Nancy Spencer.

“BGSU is both honored and thrilled to welcome the inaugural NFL Sports Journalism & Communication Boot Camp to our campus. We have both highly skilled professors and alumni teaching interactive sessions and providing excellent instruction in the fast-changing sports media industry,” said DR. TERRY RENTNER, professor and director, BGSU School of Media and Communications.

“We are excited to work with Bowling Green State University as we continue to take advantage of the expanded offseason to provide current and former players opportunities to explore a wide variety of disciplines and get hands-on experience,” said TROY VINCENT, Senior Vice President of NFL Player Engagement.

Player enrollment criteria include previous participation in NFL Player Engagement programs, prior media experience, essays, and NFL playing experience.

About RadioFlag -

RadioFlag is social media and content discovery platform for radio. The service
allows users to discover new stations, new DJ’s and Talk Radio Hosts, and stream
their personal favorite stations from their smartphone or computer, regardless of
where in the world they might be. Not only can listeners tune in, but RadioFlag
provides the unique connection to live radio DJs and their listeners, fostering
communication beyond the call-lines.
The service offers social connectivity between members of a live radio audience,
and links radio listeners through music, lifestyle, opinions, news and trends. In
addition, our users are creating an awareness of where the most unique, live, on-
air talent can be found. Our mission is to spotlight college and independent radio
stations by placing them on equal footing with the larger, well-financed commercial
stations.
RadioFlag launched from the University of California, Irvine (UCI), with support from
campus station KUCI on April 4, 2011. RadioFlag launched its website nationally in
October 2011. The company is comprised of over 20 people, including mostly young
and talented software engineers and social media and marketing professionals.
Respected radio industry professionals have also joined the team to help the effort.
From the company’s launch at a single college station, RadioFlag has now expanded
on a large scale, connecting with over 300 college stations and creating a College
Radio Advisory Board, established to help better guide RadioFlag in supporting
college stations across the station. Considering that most of the RadioFlag team
consists of recent college graduates or current college students, its not hard to see
the natural connection between RadioFlag and college radio.

Michael McIntyre ’87 visited with TCOM4620 via Skype on April 4, 2012. Michael is the host of WCPN’s Sound of Ideas a daily public affairs program that airs on the NPR affiliate in Cleveland, Ohio. He is also a featured columnist for the Cleveland Plain Dealer notably writing The Tipoff for the PD. He shared insights about hosting, producing, writing for the paper and how media convergence is at the center of the industry today. He is a wonderfully gracious alumnus and we are glad that he was able to take time from his busy schedule to talk with our students.

Karen Schaefer visited Stephen Merrill’s TCOM4620 Radio Programming class and talked with students about opportunities in non-commercial media, fielded student questions and provided students with valuable industry insights.

Karen Schaefer Bio

Karen Schaefer is a veteran public radio journalist based in Northeast Ohio with more than 65 national, regional and local awards for her in-depth reports, documentaries and interviews on subjects ranging from the environment to politics, the economy, homeland security, and breaking news of the day.

Schaefer began her career in public broadcasting at WBNI-Fort Wayne in 1979 as a volunteer music show host. Nine years later, she moved to Ohio, where she began freelancing for magazines and newspapers, among them the Cleveland Plain Dealer. She also produced a short weekly radio program for four years for WCLV, a classical radio station in Cleveland.

In 1998, Schaefer was hired as a freelance journalist at public radio station WCPN-Cleveland. She became a full-time employee in 2000. First as a general assignment, then environmental beat reporter, Schaefer produced stories for WCPN and national and international news networks including NPR, the CBC, the BBC and Voice of America. She provided exclusive coverage of the Davis-Besse nuclear plant’s near-disaster for NPR, covered multiple presidential campaigns, and filed national stories ranging from NASA funding to Ohio’s Underground Railroad history. She also produced numerous television segments for WVIZ-Public Television in Cleveland.

Schaefer moved to Ohio public radio station WKSU at Kent, Ohio in 2006. For the next three years she produced daily features and spots for local broadcast. At WKSU, her stories for NPR included obituaries of Ohio soldiers killed in Iraq or Afghanistan, as well as features on air traffic controllers, the recession and green technology.

In October of 2009, Schaefer was downsized from WKSU as part of a cost-cutting move. For the past two years, she has been freelancing once again. Her stories have aired on NPR, WBEZ-Chicago, WBUR-Boston’s Only A Game, and The Allegheny Front, a Pittsburgh public radio environmental news program. She is currently working on a radio history project for the Ohio Humanities Council.

Schaefer has been a member of the Society of Environmental Journalists since 2003. Throughout her career, she’s been fortunate to receive training from some of the best in the biz: David Candow, CBC producer and NPR’s ‘host whisperer,’ Davis Nelson of the Kitchen Sisters, journalism guru Jay Rosen, and voice coach Marilyn Pittman, to name a few. Schaefer has also been named a fellow for multiple workshops and fellowships, including SEJ, the Ohio Sea Grant, and the Institutes for Journalism and Natural Resources. She’s been invited to speak at numerous venues, including the Ohio State University, and has taught classes at Oberlin College and Kent State University.
