Hekker: Paradise Lost Response
In the essay Paradise Lost (Domestic Division) I highly enjoy the fact that author Terry Martin Hekker is humorous and understands and describes the mistakes she has made in her life. She describes to the reader that in a previous work she wrote about how she comes from a long line of homemaking women and though they were never allowed to pick their occupation, at least they were cheerful. She also says that she loved being a homemaker herself and that it was a perfectly reasonable occupation, she just never really got the respect she wanted. Now that she has gone through a divorce and can no longer be a homemaker she tells us in this work that she has been betrayed so badly that it is ridiculous in this day and age to believe that you can continue through life as a stay at home mother and or wife. I like this essay because it shows you the many ways Hekker has grown through her life and how she has also grown through her writing.
Though I did enjoy this essay it did have a few minor problems such as its tone and the point behind it. In this new writing Hekker doesn’t necessarily keep a respectable tone, she is very sarcastic and though funny she is hard to take seriously. It somewhat seems like this kind of tone should be used in a funny movie instead and the sarcasm is the comedic relief. The point behind this story could have also been much more developed because although Hekker lightly describes whether she thinks she agrees that a homemaking woman should have a backup plan in case something happens, she never really explains why she thinks it’s a good idea to have one or a bad idea. All in all, I overall did like this essay and I would defiantly refer it to anyone who is willing to read a less serious work about an elder women’s life.
