I chose to write about the second topic. The topic concerning parent’s rights regarding their children’s facebook accounts, myspace accounts, email accounts, etc. My parents never asked for my passwords which is probably one of the reasons we got along reasonably well. One of my best friend’s mothers had her kids tape the passwords to their computer. She constantly had to sneak around having multiple accounts of everything. She would only check her real accounts at other people’s houses. This is why I chose to write about this topic. I think that the parents should give their kids some privacy. I feel that going on other people’s online accounts is just like going through other people’s mail. I think that the kids should have to have their passwords available in case something happens like they disappear, but the parents should only use it if something drastic like that happens and for no other reason. Also, because I would like to know more about other people’s experiences with parent’s trust. I will probably just start simple research on google or yahoo.
This is a good topic because people have been dealing with it for a couple of years. Parents struggle with choosing whether or not to let their children have this freedom or to demand having the passwords. The kids either have to deal with their overprotective parents or make choices on whether or not to put certain things out there on the internet that they wouldn’t put there if their parents were monitoring their internet accounts.

After reading through parts of chapter six the next paper due should go more smoothly. I will start with choosing a topic and I will stay focused on that topic. I will take a stand for the paper and I will present it in a respectable way. I will keep in mind that other people will have different opinions and that is okay. I will make sure that my opinion on the topic is clear and I will support my thesis with facts and examples. On Monday, I will research my topic so that I have facts and examples to include in my paper. Also, I will make sure to include counterarguments and show my reasoning behind why I am correct. These I will also research on Monday. Once I have finished researching on Monday I will make a clear outline of the paper I plan on writing. On Tuesday, I will write my paper using the outline that I made.

From the you tube videos I learned some things about argument. From the Monty Python video I learned that arguments and contradictions are two separate things. A contradiction is when someone is just opposing whatever the other one has to say. On the other hand, an argument is when the two people or groups of people actually have valid reasons behind their opposing opinions. An argument is a debate over differences in opinion. After watching the taxi cab driver video I learned that once you state what your opinion in the argument you have to be able to back it up. From the Obama video I learned that it is not acceptable in your argument to lie. Facts are a key to winning an argument. People listening to your argument may call you out on it. They won’t support an argument based on lies they want to hear valid proof behind what you are trying to argue.

Before our next class I will focus on the question “Does each paragraph lead to the next?” I chose this question because I know the transitions in my paper need work.

When I begin to revise my paper I will start with the revision guidelines. I will read through my paper and make sure every question is answered positively. Especially making sure it fulfills the assignment and that my point is stated clearly. I will carefully consider the critiques that I received. For example, Claiborne suggested that I add something to equal out my belief with my story example. I will look at the paper myself and read it aloud to make sure it sounds like me. Also, this will help me to change parts that I do not like or feel could be better. I need to work on the segues between different parts of my paper to make the paper flow better. Then I will make an outline of my paper. This will help me to focus the paper and to work on the structure of it. Once I have done some revising I will ask my roommate and maybe some friends to read my paper so that I can get other opinions on it. I may have them look at the questions from the revision guidelines or the peer review sheet as well. After I have worked on the paper for awhile I will take a break so that I can clear my head and maybe get some new idea

3. The essays show that beliefs can come from hardships.. for ex. Jackie Robinson’s belief was developed from the prejudices he experienced and dealt with
4. God shows up a lot… Jackie Robinson, Helen Keller, and Stanley Allyn all discuss a belief in God

The point of a This I Believe essay is to share a personal belief with others. It allows the writer to open up and share what is important to them. It helps the writer to define what they believe in and how it is they came to believe in it. The writer shares a personal story with the reader that allows the reader to understand and possibly empathize with the belief they are reading about. The essay shows how the belief has grown or how it is continuing to grow. A major goal of the essay is to stay positive and only share what it is you believe in and not what you do not believe in.
