Artist Statement – Revised Final

In Your Face

The theme of “In Your Face” is cultural appropriation, or how we as Americans adopt iconography of another culture and use it for purposes that are unintended by the original culture. I have modeled this process by adopting images in a very illustrative and tattoo based aesthetic that include, elements that I have barrowed from the Japanese, Chinese, Roman, Native American and even the Victorian era cultures. By acquiring symbols and aesthetics from these cultures and creating a popular culture object (the tattoo, I simulate the thoughtless process of appropriation that strips these icons of meaning.

I have printed some of the work on fine art paper to elevate the process to “fine art”, but I also covered the wall behind them with layers of cheep copies to simulate the billboard aesthetic of our careless use of the symbols in adjusting while some find this offensive, others feel this is part of the cultural continuum. Perhaps this thinking stereotypes culture into a general view, but in the end, I want to raise these questions for the viewer to ponder.

For this work, I always been inspired by and held respect for tattoo artwork, and wanted to create a dialogue between old artwork in a relatively new media. By modeling the process of cultural appropriation and by representing it as both “fine” art and as popular advertising, I challenge the viewers to question the ethics of this practice and decide how they feel about it and what impact it has on cultural practice.

Artist Statement – Draft

The theme of this body of work is to demonstrate how we as Americans adopt iconography of another culture, and use it for purposes that are unintended by the original culture. I’ve adapted these images in a very illustrative and tattoo based feel, with such elements that I’ve taken from the Japanese culture, Chinese culture, Native American culture and even the Victorian era. I’ve revered other cultures relics and wanted to copy their objects that I find interesting and unique.

I’ve digitally painted these works on HGE paper, as well as covered the wall behind them up with these works to show the underlying issue of this cultural appropriation, seeing as many of these cultures I’ve draw influence from can often find these barrowing tactics as offensive and unflattering. As well to raise the question of, “is this okay that our culture is doing this”? As well as if this considered stereotyping an entire culture based on what our society thinks of their culture.

I’ve always been inspired by tattoo artwork and have had a respect for it, and wanted to create dialogue between and old artwork in a relatively new medium. I wanted to depict how when this cultural appropriation happens we might see it as being courteous but we are just copying what little we know about the culture as well as showing that were barrowing from them as well.

So i talked with Dena and I’m suppose to write what i want to do for my final BFA show. Im going to have 4 digital paintings framed on the wall. As well as 2 photographs of 2 of my digital paintings on the skin of the body of models. These photographs will be touched up in photoshop to have a black background as if they were showing off real tattoos. Then the wall space i will use as well. I’m going to print all of my digital paintings (smaller), and cover the wall with them, as if they where layered on. And even some of them will be torn, as if it looked like an old rustic billboard.

So last night i talked to Kim and got her input. She thinks i could transfer my digital paintings onto people’s skin, making them the effect of tattoos. Then i could photograph them and take pictures of them, editing them in photoshop so i can add that too my presentation at the BFA show. I think thats a  pretty good idea, so i spent today modifying them to make them tithable and accessible to apply to the skin, and sent them too the MCAP lab.

10 – 27

So today we did our small group crib with Dena. And i showed my stuff that I’ve been working on (last 2 digital paintings). And the topic came up again as too how i will display it. This is probably the most important thing for my work, because like we said in the crib, it’ll make my work more interesting and open for discussion. I was also told too talk to Kim, and i emailed her yesterday, and were going to talk and give me her input tomorrow after class. So that’s what we did today. Our group was not having the crib today, Kerry, Jordan and Trish were all pretty quiet. I myself was also pretty quiet so i take some of the blame.

So today i just worked on my drawing with micron pens and scanned in the image. it was a pretty boring day. My next drawing is going to be a tiger. And I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out. Im going to stride for 2 more digital painting, and then I’m going to use the remainder of the semester working on how I’m going to display it.

so today i just went around my dragons outline totally solid black. And i had a really good discussion with Dena. We talked about the idea and thesis, and why its important. We talked about american probation and why i do what i do and barrow from all different cultures in my work. She also told me i need too talk to Kim about it, and figure out a way to display it. Which I’m going to do.

Today i was working on mainly blocking in parts on my new digital painting of a dragon. I’ve completed the background over fall break, and now I’m working on the actual dragon itself. i blocked in a strong green on my dragon and started highlighting some of the facial features. by incorporating pink throughout the tusks of the dragon. It’s a slow start but i didn’t want to start blending it all together, because the brushes on this version of photoshop suck!!! and mine are way better…well there actually not mine, i stole them years ago from Wayne Madison, plus Faircloud gave me his brushes about 2 years ago, so i always use his custom brushes that are fare superior than the ones on the photoshop in the  mac lab….The end!!!!

Today was the small group discussion with Trish and Kerry, and I’m really happy about it. I got a lot of good feedback – which makes me happy I’ve been working my butt off for this semester. Everyone has said that i have a certain style. But i need to convey more of my academic input on my work. Because i like to do work that deals with Japanese culture and am really good at it, doesn’t mean its interesting. Which i totally agree with and get. There’s got to be something said about my work. I got some really good input from dena, and the gang.

So today was a work day, and i spent the time taking in the eraser tool and making my background on my latest piece. It’s the boring process, but the part thats necessary for me to start getting down and dirty on my projects. I also am leaving after class and going to my moms work and scanning an image that i drew up.

Another Contract

So after doing research i reevaluated my statement to where i want to make pieces using the influence of where tattooing originally spawned from – Japan (early 16th century). As well as include traditional subject matter that where and still are included in Japanese tattooing.

I still want to include my style of drawing (referred to as “New School”). i think that this will compliment these piece with my new school technic and Digital format to an other words “old school” technic and practice.

This is as well a study for myself. In Japan, the people do not classify tattooing as a high art form, and i want to see if i can get these images to be perceive as “fine art” in a gallery. While making pieces of work that is very much a tattoo inspired body of work.

9/1 – Introduced our bodies of work.

So today half of the class introduced what they’ve done over the course of their time at BGSU. When i introduced my work, i got feedback as too what i could do for the BFA show. Im into making gangster stuff, and dope works. But the feed back for my pieces was that i should have reasons as too why i draw what i draw. i mainly think during my work stuff like “I’m going too make some gangster polar bear with a laser beam on his head”…Why? Because i can, and I’m good at it, and it’ll look B0$$. But i understand where they’re coming from, i should be interacting with the viewers when they look at my work. Some solid feedback.

Over and Out,
