Columbus Dispatch copy-editing internship positions

Looking for a summer internship that offers real-world experience at a major daily newspaper? The Columbus Dispatch is accepting applications for its news, sports and features copy desks. Interns do exactly the same work our full-timers do: editing local and wire copy and graphics, and writing display text for A1, other section fronts and inside pages. The pace is quick and the standards are high, but the people are friendly and you’ll leave each night feeling like you accomplished something.

Because we have high expectations for our interns, the requirements – while few – are strict:

Experience writing headlines and editing copy at another newspaper. A previous copy-desk internship is preferred but work at a college paper is welcome, too. If the extent of your editing experience comes from classes, you’re not ready for us yet, but we’d welcome you to apply in another year.

A working knowledge of Associated Press style.

Familiarity with our paper and a willingness to try creative headlines.

The positions: These are paid internships on the news copy desk, the features desk and the sports desk. The news copy desk handles stories for A1, the Nation & World section, Metro, Business and Faith & Values. The features copy desk handles stories for Life & Arts, Travel, Home & Garden, Food and Weekender. The sports copy desk handles stories for the daily Sports section and some special sports sections.

How to apply: All applications must include a cover letter, resume, list of references and clips specifying what changes you made and what display text you wrote. Letters of reference also are welcome. Please specify which desks you are interested in. By mail: News Editor Danny Goodwin, The Dispatch, 34 S. 3rd St., Columbus, OH 43215. By e-mail: Make sure to include all of the above items, especially the explanation of what you did on your clips, to dgoodwin@dispatch.com. Please put “summer internship application” in the subject line.

The deadline to apply is Dec. 15.
