PopC 3950: Storytelling Fieldtrip (1 credit):

Both sections (workshop and fieldtrip) may be taken for a total of 4 credits.

PopC 3950: Storytelling Fieldtrip (1 credit):

For students attending the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, TN. Those in the one credit course only will not attend the weekly workshop class meetings.

Minimum BGSU age for field trip is eighteen, unless accompanied by a parent. Maximum enrollment 20.

On the first full weekend of October, the class will drive to Jonesborough, TN (520 miles one way) and experience some of the finest storytellers in the world. We will leave in individual cars at 7:00 a.m. on Thurs. and arrive at our motel in Johnson City around 5 p.m. On Sunday morning, we will leave the motel and get back to Huron around 6 p.m.

Fieldtrip Costs:

  • ** Festival Registration: $155 (for Fri and Sat);
  • ** Motel costs (Johnson City Red Roof Inn) $223 per person – three nights, two in a room; Students must arrange for their own housing.
  • ** Food (4 days) estimate $20/day = $80; (varies according to diet and budget)
  • ** Sharing gas costs with driver: (depends on costs of gas and number of passengers)
  • ** Shuttle to and from festival $8.00

Fieldtrip Meeting Schedule:

  • August 27, 2009. 7- 8 pm. Business meeting to discuss costs, housing and travel arrangements.

PopC 3950: Storytelling Workshop (3 credits)

A workshop approaching storytelling (oral literature) from the perspective of folklore and personal narrative. Readings in fairytale collections and studying the art of storytelling leading to a number of in-class performances. Course enhanced with video examples by leading storytellers.

What is this course about?
The purpose of this course is to learn how to tell compelling stories and to practice the art of storytelling with a small group of peers with a similar interest. One’s audience depends upon personal needs: parents, children’s librarians, and elementary teachers might focus on young children, while those in involved in business or church might focus on adults. Those majoring in the dramatic arts might be all-inclusive as they visualize mixed theatre audiences. . .
