People often tend to blindly follow authority figures without thinking about what they’ve been told to do. If people do not think for themselves, problems of morals and ethics arise, these can result in bad events occurring.

For MSE #2 my thesis will be: When told to do something by a figure of power, people will do so, even if it goes against their own morals or ethics. Knowing this, authoritative figures have an upper-hand and can easily manipulate.

In today’s society the obedience that people have to authority can seem only negative. I would like to find reasons why it is not only negative but also positive. Researching the affects of obedience in the military, social settings, and legal settings can prove positive affects in society.

Are psychological experiments like the Stanford Prison Experiment and the Milgram experiment unethical? Does the information that we learn about human behavior make the experiments worth the danger to the subjects?

The college students who participated in the Stanford Prison Experiment were picked up at their own home, “charged,” read their Miranda rights, patted down against the police car, searched, and handcuffed. They went though all of this trouble to create the feeling that they were really criminals going to prison.
