Children’s Book Memories: The 90′s

     Thanks to a great assignment from the GSW classes, we’ve had a run on children’s titles that were popular in the 1990′s.  Some of the top picks this year have been:

Anything by Dr. Seuss.  From the Grinch to Horton to Cat In the Hat, this generation has warm, fuzzy feelings about all things Seuss.  That or Seuss is the only author’s name they can remember.

Spooky, Scary Stories

  October is the perfect month for all things scary. Books are no exception.  Whether you like classic horror and vampires, magic, paranormal events, or ghost stories, the CRC has young adult/adult books for you. We have classics like Dracula and many newer titles. Come to the CRC soon to see our display of spooky, scary stories for young adult and adult readers so you can choose your favorite to check out.

           

Picturebooks with Audio Available Here

   Many of our books come with CDs.  Some CDs narrate the story, others have music that goes along, and one even has bird songs which go along with the illustrations.  Explore the world of sound to accompany the written text.  To find picture books with audio simply go to our catalog, keyword search audiobooks and stories, and limit your search to location: Curriculum Resource Center.

Buckeye Book Award Winners

The Buckeye Children’s Book Award Council has announced the winners of the 2011 Buckeye Children’s Book Award and the 2011 Teen Buckeye Award. These books were selected entirely by children, which distinguishes the Ohio awards from those of other states. The winners are:

Grades K-2     Shark vs. Train by Chris Barton, ill. by Tom Lichtenheld      

Grades 3-5     Chalk by Bill Thomson    

Grades 6-8     Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper    

Teens               The Exiled Queen (Seven Realms book 2) by Cinda Williams Chima

YA Reads: Latino People and Cultures

Celebrate Latino people and cultures in the CRC this month! Our YA display features  a variety of writers from Isabel Allende to Julia Alvarez and Gary Soto.  Come in and find a new favorite.                                                                            

 

New Favorites to go with the Old

     During National Library we we asked our patrons to name their favorite children’s book.  We discovered that many of you love the same titles such as Love You Forever by Robert Munsch and anything by Dr. Seuss.  But we were also delighted to see a few newer titles, like the Pigeon books by Mo Willems and the very funny Pout-Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen.  Continue Reading

Multicultural Magazines for Kids

  Both Skipping Stones and Cricket are imaginative, multicultural children’s magazines that we offer here at the CRC for checkout.   Skipping Stones features articles and art by children and young people from around the world and Cricket is full of article and stories by children’s authors.
