Hip-Hop Curriculum

April 16 is the birthday of Clive Campbell, aka DJ Kool Herc, who is credited with originating hip hop music in the Bronx, New York City.  Art Sanctuary, a non-profit organization out of North Philadelphia, has compiled an excellent Hip Hop Curriculum Guide to teach students about writing, reading and critical thinking through an analysis on hip-hop culture.  Our Children’s Book Center features two new books on hip hop for kids, Cool Hip-Hop Music : Create & Appreciate What Makes Music Great! by Karen Latchana Kenney (JUV 782.421649K367c) and Hip Hop Speaks to Children : A Celebration of Poetry With a Beat compilied by editor, Nikki Giovanni ( JUV 811.008H667) which is a collection of fifty-one children’s poems that features selections from Nikki Giovanni, Queen Latifah, and the Sugarhill Gang; and contains an audio CD with thirty performances.
