The Mayflower and the Pilgrims’ New World

Philbrick, Nathaniel.  The Mayflower and the Pilgrims’ New World.  New York:  G.P. Putnam’s Sons, 2008.

History writer Nathaniel Philbrick has adapted his 480 page Mayflower:  A Story of Community, Courage, and War (2006) for young people.  It opens with the the planning of the voyage of the Mayflower and ends fifty-six years later with 180 Native Americans shipped off in the Seaflower as slaves bound for Jamaica.  In between, the story of William Bradford and Massasoit, Benjamin Church and King Philip play out in fascinating stories not part of the traditional Thanksgiving myth.  Recommended for all who enjoy American history.  Readers will find The Mayflower and the Pilgrims’ New World with the CSCL books in the CRC hallway at JUV 973.2 P545m.
