Resume Assignment

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Hello and welcome back to the TCOM 264 Blog.

Today we will be working on our online resumes.

Please visit http://drop.io/3btnpj8 and download the index.html file to your desktop.

This file will replace the index.html file within the “resume” folder of you personal.bgsu.edu site.

Once you have downloaded it, please wait for further instructions since I am not sure how much information about your individual site will be stored within the Dreamweaver application of your individual computers.

If you would like, you may open your site (from where ever you have “locally” stored it — not the online version) and prepare to replace the old index.html file within the resume folder with the new one.

If you do not like the format I have provided you or you would like to explore other formats, I recommend visiting the writing center, attending a resume workshop on campus, or you may visit this site for other ideas.

Class announcements… Grades, Site 1, Midterm, Site 2, etc.

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

There is a bunch of stuff here, make sure you read it all carefully.

Class: We have fallen about a week behind our schedule, which is fine, but we will have to make some adjustments. Nothing major, just some minor shifts.

Grades: I am nearly done compiling your grades so far. If you have done all of your assignments, regularly attend class, and regularly added blog posts last week, you most likely have a very solid A so far. If one of these categories was laking in some way, your grade will likely be lower. I will send you an e-mail this week with your grade information and class assessment.

Site 1: As stated on the grades page, Site 1 (Wordpress/Blog) is worth 10% of your grade. This is determined by the quality and consistency of your posts, the overall design of your blog, and the individual homework assignments. Along with your grade, you must think that if this was for a job, would you still have your job come Monday morning? For the remainder of the class, you must post at least one blog post per week. I will check every Sunday afternoon for a new post.

Midterm Exam: The midterm exam was originally scheduled for this week, but will be pushed back to next week. The exam will be held on Wednesday, March 4th. A optional review session will be held during our class period on Monday, March 2nd.

Site 2: Site 2 will be an online portfolio. The goal of this site is to begin to understand how to utilize the Internet to “sell yourself” on the job market. As communications students, it is imperative that you have a good working knowledge of the Internet and are able to present yourself positively via the Web. With this site, we will learn basic skills of Dreamweaver and continue our work with FTP and Photoshop. This site will count towards 15% of your final grade.

So, What’s Next?: On Wednesday and Friday, we will be going over basic HTML and aspects of web design, layout, and navigation. We will also be “introducing” Dreamweaver to the class and discussing what makes a good personal website. Some things to start thinking about in preparation for building this site:

  • Resume: Do you have a resume? If you do not, you need one or you need to start putting one together. If you’ve never compiled a resume before, check out About.com’s “Writing Your First Resume” or the Writing Center’s “Resume” handout. You may also schedule an appointment at the BGSU Writing Center to help build your resume.
  • Writing Sample: You will include at least one example of your writing. This should be of a professional quality. A favorite paper from a class is a good start.
  • Sample of Creative Work: Are you an artist, musician, creative writer, graphic designer, dancer, filmmaker? Do you want to include an example of your work? How can you best present your work?
  • Contact Information: How can someone contact you? Do you want to include information about your Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc. accounts?
  • Skills and Abilities: What else would “sell” you? What can you do that might be of interest to a potential employer?
  • Links Pages: Links pages seem innocuous, but may actually tell your site’s visitors a lot about you. It may also lead one to your page by way of a Google search.
  • What Else?: There is no finite definition of what should be on these sites. What else would you want to include?

What about Assignment 15?

Friday, February 20th, 2009

You may have noticed in the last blog post, I asked for four posts, but refer to them as “Assignments 11-15.”

Assignment 15 will be the Blog as a whole. From day one all the way through your most recent Blog posts. You will be graded on content, design, readability, and structure. This grade will count towards 10% of your grade.

Coupled with attendance and participation, as well as the 14 assignments and one quiz we have already had in class, this will tell you your grade so far as we prepare for the upcoming midterm exam.

I will send you a quick e-mail in the next few days concerning your grade.

Have a nice weekend.

Assignments #11-15: Blogging

Friday, February 13th, 2009

Over the course of the next week, you will be following a piece of advice from Farhad Manjoo’s article. You will be posting often; AT LEAST four posts (on your own schedule) over the next seven days. Please do not wait to do them all in one day, the idea is to create fresh and new content for your readers (whoever they may be). If you want, you may post more than four blog posts, but please do not sacrifice quality for quantity.

Only the first blog post is of a mandatory subject. The others may be culled from a group of options. You will have time to work on the posts during class time.

Refer back to Manjoo’s article for advice. Add links to make the posts more relevant. Add images to make the posts more interesting. Check spelling and typos to make the posts more readable.

Today’s post (must be posted by the end of this coming weekend) is a reaction to a New York Times article from 2002 entitled “I Think, Therefore IM.” Please summarize the article and provide your own opinion. Many of you are of the generation of people the author is speaking about. Do you feel you/they are guilty of such accusations? Provide links to other resources and/or blogs to add to your article. Don’t rush it, take your time, and make it good.

For the rest of the posts, please choose from the following general topics. You do not need to do one of each, but please only do one of each general topic.

  1. Valentine’s Day – Why do you like or dislike this holiday?
  2. Abraham Lincoln – Sometimes referred to as our greatest president, this year marks Lincoln’s 200th birthday. What is the lasting impact (if any) of Abraham Lincoln?
  3. Local cultural, arts, academic, or social event – Attend a play, concert, lecture, or cultural event on campus or in the area and tell the blogosphere about it.
  4. Bowling Green, Ohio – This is your town (at least while you are attending BGSU), inform the blogosphere about some aspect of it you find interesting.
  5. TV show, album, or film review – Review a recently-viewed TV show/film or a recently-heard album that you liked or didn’t like.
  6. Sports Op/Ed – Chime in about a recent game/event or sports management dealing.
  7. The stimulus package –  Chime in about the government’s current intentions to reinvigorate the economy.
  8. D-TV Crossover – Explain the plan to changeover to digital television and how that changed recently.
