Each info session is immediately followed by an OPEN LAB with experienced Instructional Designers on hand to answer questions about managing an online classroom. Come to one, come to all, or just drop in during an open lab to talk to an instructional designer about your course.

The Center for Online and Blended Learning (COBL) is pleased to present an “Applying the Quality Matters Rubric” workshop for faculty on Tuesday, March 6th. Quality Matters is a faculty-centered, peer review process designed to certify quality in online courses. Quality Matters has generated widespread interest and has become a national standard in its peer-based approach to quality assurance and continuous improvement in online education.

This all day training session is provided at no cost for BGSU faculty. Faculty who complete the training can opt to take a certification exam to become a national Quality Matters online course reviewer. This is a great opportunity for professional development and for networking with peers who share an interest in teaching online!

Presentations, Lectures, and Tutorials: Academic Earth, SlideShare, authorSTREAM, iTunesU, Open Courseware Consortium, TED Talks, Khan Academy

Videos: You know that video you like to show in class? Search for the title on Clicker.com. If it’s on the web, they’ll find it. You can also go directly to the sources:
- Free: YouTube, Hulu, Vimeo, PBS Video, Google Video, virtually any news source like CNN or NY Times.
- Extensive list from OpenCulture.com, scroll past individual titles to see more great websites.
- Subscription based: Netflix, Amazon VOD, iTunes (you can’t embed these, even if you pay for them, and each student would need to get a subscription to view as well. Think of it as a book fee)

Staff Blog: Create and Publish Narrated Presentations on the Web

COBL staffer Carolyn has written a great post about creating narrated presentations…which is something that should be easier than it is! Here’s an excerpt:

Narrated presentations are quite popular these days. I’m sure you’ve seen more than a few examples by now; we’ve used Articulate (expensive and not mobile friendly) and SlideShare (free, kinda clunky) in the past but have still not found the perfect solution. The problem is not creating the narrations (PowerPoint has had a narration feature for years), it’s distributing them with a manageable file size. Since PowerPoint does not compress the audio, a 10min. narrated presentation could be about upwards of 5GB! That would take a long time to download, even on the fasted connection. My solution utilizes two awesome and FREE web-based tools, which means there’s nothing for you or your students to download:

One of our biggest pet peeves about Blackboard is that students cannot interact with class Announcements. We are used to being able to do this all across the web, since most websites have a social component built in (mainly commenting). We thought we’d try something new and post our announcements on our blog and set the blog to be our course entry point. Here’s how we did it:

One major factor that separates a passive learning experience from an active and engaging learning experience, regardless of the medium, is the amount of interaction facilitators have with their students. Terence, Ginny, and Carolyn will be presenting at the first annual Ohio Learning Network Spring Colloquium in Columbus on April 11. The focus of the panel is to talk about the different ways we have helped instructors enhance their online presence to foster an engaging learning environment. We will discuss some of the communication and collaboration tools that can add a human element to the online classroom.

DESCRIPTION

The 21% growth rate for online enrollments far exceeds the 2% growth in the overall higher education student population (Sloan C). The demand for access to online courses is incredibly evident. One major factor that separates a passive learning experience from an active and engaging learning experience, regardless of the medium, is the amount of interaction facilitators have with their students. Quality course content is not in short supply online. In fact, MIT offers the content from almost all of their courses online for free. The glue that binds quality content with active learning experiences are the teachers who make themselves available, give timely feedback, and provide opportunities for students to take an active role in their own learning.

A recent article in the NYTimes suggested that students need to build meaningful relationships with their teacher and peers in order to be motivated to succeed. This can be difficult in an online course if teachers rely solely on the learning management system. We, as educators, can leverage the popularity of the social web in a way that interaction and communication become central to the learning experience.

The focus of this panel is to talk about the different ways we have helped instructors enhance their online presence to foster an engaging learning environment. We will discuss some of the communication and collaboration tools that can add a human element to the online classroom.

Topics will include:

Techniques to make the best use of your time in the Discussion Board
Using Google Docs’ live editing features for interactive tutoring, collaboration, and feedback.
Encouraging students to connect outside the classroom through social networking and media.
Create engaging content and lectures by integrating social tools.
