Community Invited to Free Send Off and Preview

Performers from the Caryl Crane Youth Theatre at BGSU Firelands are preparing to take the show on the road. The group has been accepted into the 2017 iTheatrics Junior Theater Festival in Atlanta, Ga., which is being held from January 13 – 15.

Created by New York’s iTheatrics and produced by the Junior Theater group, the iTheatrics Junior Theater Festival is the world’s largest festival for student-driven musical theater programs and a monumental weekend of theatrical fellowship. Musical theater professionals from Broadway and beyond connect directly with one of the largest live audiences of artists and arts’ supporters of tomorrow.

During the three day event, each competing group will perform a 15-minute selection of a musical for judging by a panel of distinguished theater professionals.

The 36 Caryl Crane Youth Theatre performers, ages 8 through 18, will perform a selection from their recent production of “Honk Jr.”  The group is led by Director Brian Marshall.

The iTheatrics Junior Theater Festival Atlanta will unite 6,000+ students and educators from 115 educational musical theater groups representing 28 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, New Zealand, South Korea and Australia.

The Caryl Crane Youth Theatre students are inviting all community members to a preview and send off on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. in the McBride Auditorium on the BGSU Firelands campus. Admission is free, they just ask that everyone donate snacks for the very long bus ride to Atlanta.

About Honk! JR.

“Honk!” by George Stiles (composer) and Anthony Drewe (books and lyrics) was selected as the 2000 Olivier award’s “Best New Musical.” A contemporary comic adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Ugly Duckling,” “Honk! JR.” follows the character Ugly, whose odd, gawky looks instantly incite prejudice from his family and neighbors. Separated from the farm and pursued by a hungry cat, Ugly must find his way home, with only his loving mother, Ida, searching for him. Along his harrowing yet hilarious journey he not only discovers his true beauty and glorious destiny, but also finds love and acceptance in all its forms. The musical is so inspirational in its message of acceptance and tolerance that the Ministry of Education in Israel has made it compulsory viewing for school children.
