The University community has been enjoying the delicate blossoms’ annual display thanks to the generosity of alumni and friends in Japan, and the long-ago friendship between then-President William Howard Taft of Ohio and the government of Japan.

A BGSU distinguished alumna, Nakamoto-Sensei graciously donated both the Japanese Studies Room (that we use for our club activities) and the Tea Room in the Art Building Gallery.

Nakamoto-sensei has done a great deal not just for the Japanese Club and the Asian Studies department, but for our university as a whole.

This is a wonderful opportunity for you to meet with this very special person, so please join us this week to welcome and thank Nakamoto-Sensei. Let’s show our appreciation for all that she’s done for us!!

A Hampton-Tuskegee School on Japan’s Northern Frontier

His talk explores the development of segregated schools for Indigenous people in early 20th Century Hokkaido, Japan, with particular attention to the Abuta Industrial School (1902-1938) as an example of the global export of the Hampton-Tuskegee model of African- American schooling.
