I haven’t heard much from my client this week. They are finishing preparations for Earth day. I am plugging away at the template and I hope to have some business cards sent to Vista Print by the end of the week. Once the letterhead and envelope are done. I am going to have a meeting with Sandy about the elements she wasn’t to include in the newsletter template.
I’m still working on getting templates for a newsletter, letterhead, envelope, and business card. My client want to use Vista Print to print the business cards so I think that I will suggest to the client that I create an Illustrator document she can output to use for ordering business cards. Other then that, they are still in the process of screen printing t-shirts for an up coming event. I cant wait to see my logo design on a t-shirt.
Also, thank you to those who commented on my last post giving me guidance on how to create a word template. I’m still working on this but the insight has given me a direction to work toward.
This week my client has asked me to create a newsletter, letterhead, envelope, and business card. My main challenge is that she would like most of these things (newsletter, letterhead, and envelope) to be created for use in Microsoft Word. This is something I am unfamiliar with. This week will be mainly researching how to create Word templates and figuring out how to implement design elements in Word.
I have been working with my client to get t-shirts screen printed with the new branding. I converted the multi-colored logo into a single color version for this purpose. The client sent me some images she created in Photoshop, asking if I could convert them into “vector” artwork. This is a good example of trying to do your best what you are given. These files were very small and difficult to live trace. For one of them there was a QR Code included. I don’t want to have to trace this since the code needs to be exact for the link to work. So I have requested the original artwork to recreate the piece, instead of live tracing.
My client did ask to know how this process was done. So it’s nice to know that I can educate her for future projects to either do on her own or working with other professionals.
I haven’t really hard from my client this week. She did want me to tweak the logo a bit (which I did), but for the most part I’m assuming everyone is busy getting things ready for the Local Food Summit next weekend (March 10th). Tomorrow there is a meeting to discuss the Local Food Summit and other affairs, so I will hopefully be involved over the phone or on Skype to find out exactly what is going on and what needs to be done moving forward.
This week has been pretty quite with my client. I don’t know if that is a good thing or something to be worried about. I’m feeling pretty out of the loop with things going on with the Local Food Summit. I did create a poster utilizing artwork from the new logo, however my client did not like that I somewhat deconstructed the logo to use as art work for the poster. She said that she would “prefer to keep the logo intact”. So I guess that means they are not going to use the second poster I created.
At this point I’m unsure of where I stand with all the work I have done on the poster for the Local Food Summit. I’m feeling like my client and people working with her are on different pages and everyone is asking for something from me and no one is making an effort to get me in the loop.
However, at this point, the logo is finally done and they are already putting it to use. I still have to “package” it and make it available to everyone who needs it. I am also looking into converting the color logo into a single color logo for screen printing purposes.
This week my client has seemed to be pretty busy. I began working on the poster for the Local Food Summit. I took all the information she provided me about the event and created a legal sized flyer with head to toe text. With everything the client gave me there wasn’t much room for design. I really wanted to create something less busy with an eye catching graphic to announce that the Local Food Summit was taking place. I feel like what I ended up creating instead was a poster shaped pamphlet about the Local Food Summit. I hesitated sending the poster to my client because I really felt like I could do better, but with all the text it wasn’t really possible. My client saw the poster, but did not give me any feedback as to what she thought. She only requested that I send her a version she could edit the text herself. I’m not sure what that means at this moment, but I’m thinking of creating a second poster that will showcase the even more than a poster full of text and let her choose which she would like to use, if not both.
Also, I feel as though my client is getting lost in the details of the logo. We are still not finished with it. I am on version 10 and she keeps requesting changes. I’m not sure if it’s a case of uncertainty or a failure to commit to a design that will be the identity of her organization. I spoke with Lauren today, the director of City Fresh – Erie County, and she made it clear to me that everyone is under a lot of stress to make the Local Food Summit a success and gain support of The New Agrarian Center. They are all waiting on the final logo and poster to begin their marketing process. It’s clear to me, that I need to speak with my client and find out where her head is with everything we are working on.
I also found out that I might be creating a logo for the BGSU Reading Center. I hope the process is less challenging then what I have experience here with my client so far.
I have been working hard on finishing this logo for The New Agrarian Center. I have really been trying to give the client what they want, however I am not personally happy with the way the design is turning out. I feel my original design was more visually pleasing then the version my client has dictated. However, it is their vision for the organization and I respect that. Right now, I am feeling a lot of pressure to finish the logo. We are currently on Version 8 and I need to get going on the Local Food Summit poster.
I kind of have a mental block at this point with coming up with a design that will work for the Local Food Summit there is a lot of text they client has given me to work with. At this point I think I just have to sit down and start at something and see where it takes me. I hope to have something to show my client by the end of the week so they can send something out as early as next week. Hopefully, once the logo is finalized and the poster is done things will settle done some.

This week I have been doing a lot of work on The New Agrarian Center logo.
Latest Version
In the latest version, I have included all the elements that were suggested to me after my fist initial concept. Now, I am looking for the client to provide me with feedback and some edits. In my opinion, I feel like the foreground got a bit busy when I added all the vegetables that were suggested and while I like the sun rays in the background I don’t know if they are competing for attention with the foreground. I have also noticed that the colors look diffrent as a .jpg
Things I need to work on:
After the logo is done, I will begin work on my next project, a poster for the Local Food Summit on March 10th. My client has expressed a need for this poster as soon as possible, so they can begin their marketing for this event.
As of now, I’m thinking I would like to use a limited color pallet for this poster (2 to 3 colors) and create a focal graphic that gives a screen printed band poster feel. However, I still have yet to begin work on the poster. I hope to begin designing by this weekend.
Something that I have noticed I need to do more of is connecting with my client. I need to stop trying to be perfect about everything and let her in on the process. I have been asking for input from those around me instead of the person who matters most, my client. However, it has been difficult getting in contact with her through e-mails. At this point, I’m not sure if she got my last two since she has not responded to me. However, I have gotten e-mails from her. If I don’t hear back from her by tomorrow morning I’m just going to have to give her a call. I should ask her, how she would prefer to stay in contact in the future and set up a Dropbox folder so she can view my latest edited versions whenever she would like, without needing an email from me.
Last weekend I met with my client, Sandy Kish Jordan the Executive Director of The New Agrarian Center. We discussed their immediate needs and came up with the following:
The biggest problem The New Agrarian Center is facing, is that it’s current branding is segmenting into three sections (The New Agrarian Center, City Fresh CSA, and George Jones Farm). Untimely the branding for all three should be under the umbrella of The New Agrarian Center. The past executive director encourages all branches to consider themselves an entrepreneur and market themselves as such. Resulting in multiple logos, Facebook pages, CSA order forms, etc. Despite the chaos, Sandy Kish Jordan has a new vision for the organization and it starts with cohesion of identity. My first goal is to create a logo that represents The New Agrarian Center as a whole.
This first task, creating a logo, seems somewhat overwhelming to me right now. I have never had to create a logo for someone to use in this capacity. I have only ever created a logo for a friend to use for a side business as a photographer or videographer. This is much more; it’s the identity of an entire organization and I want to do it justice. Sandy said their current logo looks like something a high school student did in Microsoft paint (later she learned it was a high school student had created the logo), so I would like to provide them with a relevant and lasting design for all their needs.

Through networking I found a client: The New Agrarian Center, an organization focused on growing a sustainable local food system in Northeast Ohio. I will be working directly with Sandy Kish-Jordan someone I met several times while covering local events with The Erie Wire, an online publication I did my first co-op with. I will be meeting with her in person this weekend to discuss more in depth details about my goals for the semester.
Going into this class I knew I would need to work with a client. I have a few people in mind and I have contacted a past employer to see if they know of anyone that would be interested in working with me for this class. At this time I’m evaluating what work would benefit my portfolio and finding a reliable person to be my client.
I hope to have something more solid by this weekend, so I can begin talking with my client about their visual design needs and submitting my client application form by Wednesday of next week.
